Use our Style Guide to make venue editing more consistent
There’s no doubt you’ve seen venues listed many different ways in Foursquare’s database. Foursquare provides some guidance to users who add or edit venues, but they’ve left out a lot of things that have been left up to user interpretation. To help fill in those gaps, we’ve added a style guide to this site for your reference.
This style guide is made up of the best practices reported by superusers on Foursquare’s GetSatisfaction site and our own forums. We invite your feedback and ideas to help make it the definitive reference for editing Foursquare venues.
One of the themes you’ll notice is keeping the main venue “findable” when there are subvenues. We’ve worked to keep the main venue name out of subvenue names so that the main venue doesn’t get shuffled out of the search results. That often happens when there are a lot of subvenues that include the main venue’s name in their title, for instance “Gate B43 — CVG Airport.” Searching for “CVG” in an area crowded with subvenues that include “CVG” in that name could result in the main venue not showing up in the search results at all.
Thanks to all the superusers who’ve contributed to the style guide!

Great idea–although to be truthful, some of the points in that style guide are very much up for debate (on the Get Satisfaction forums and elsewhere.)
One important point to note: It’s not advisable to put any relevant information in the “Cross Street” field, since it’s unfortunately not used in the mobile apps or the mobile site at this point–and that’s where users are actually trying to identify and discern venues. This is also why many users still feel strongly about including location indentifiers in the venue name for similarly-named businesses within the same city. (Also, on a more minor note, this leads to venues that make more sense in a mayorship list.)
Also, regarding venue addresses, there’s a lot of info that can be provided about how to enter certain addresses so that the pushpin is placed in the correct location by the Google Maps API, which is what Foursquare uses to interpret the information users enter. I’d be happy to help with that aspect if you like!
No doubt. All the points here are up for debate. I’ve tried to go with the consensus from our forums where possible, but that’s difficult to attain on many of the topics.
Address information would be great! Do you want to get it started in the forums and we can work from there?
I stand corrected on this point; the iPhone app does make use of the cross street field, but the Android and BlackBerry apps don’t.
Are you sure about that? The official Android screenshot shows cross streets:

And the webOS app displays it as well
