Unlock a Foursquare badge and help with Hurricane Sandy relief on 12/12/12

20121211-175659.jpgTomorrow you’ll have a unique opportunity to help Hurricane Sandy Victims and unlock a special Foursquare badge just for checking in.

Simply use the #121212concert hash tag with any check-in tomorrow and Samsung will donate $10 (for the first 25,000 check-ins) to the Robin Hood Relief Fund. The money directly supports more than 100 charities dedicated to Hurricane Sandy relief.

When you use the hashtag, you’ll also unlock a special Robin Hood badge for your profile.

The effort coincides with the star-studded Hurricane Sandy relief concert at Madison Square Garden. Billed as the biggest event in music history, it features artists like Eric Clapton, Alicia Keys, The Rolling Stones, and Kanye West. The live broadcast begins at 7:30 pm Eastern.

      You should still get the badge. The limit is on the money Samsung will donate…at least that’s how I read it.

    Do we know if we can unlock it from a specific time of day? Is it while the concert is live?

      It appears to be any time on 12/12/12 (Eastern time, I assume), but you never know with Foursquare.

    Great cause but what is up with that heinous badge? I know this is a partner badge but still, is this the sort of visual oversight we can expect from 4sq now that creative mastermind Mari Sheibley is gone?

    Just checked in at 12:12am EST on 12/12/12 and used the hash tag – no badge. Will try again in the morning.

    Must be EST. I tried it in the UK at 6am and nada. Will give it a go after 7am and see what happens.

    Nothing to catch in Belgium… They donate 10$ for the FIRST 25.000 check-ins. Does it mean that only the first 25.000 check-ins earn the badge, or also the people who check-in after that? Because 25.000 check-ins is peanuts these days…
    Anyway, even if it’s still available, Europe will probably be left behind AGAIN. As usual!!

      some people even seem to be able to jump time. I see people getting NFL badges on Wednesday and Tuesday when no NFL teams are playing… dont understand that…

    Do you people care at all about the cause behind the badge or do you just want a little TIFF image attached to a software program you can use on your smartphone? How shallow has this world become?

    How many of you people have lived through your city being destroyed by a natural disaster? It’s about the donation to help hurricane victims.

      Actually, I do realize the meaning of the badge. But I also realize that the 250.000 $ will only be enough to help a minority of the victims. I’ve done my little share back in Belgium and gave 10 € during a TV fundraiser. We also need to thank Samsung for the initiative they take and I hope that more companies will follow…

      I am hoping to contribute to exactly what they want from us. Free publicity for the concert to raise funds through raising awareness. I am letting all my friends know about the concert. I plan to watch and donate myself. In exchange (I don’t need the exchange, but they are offering) I get a silly TIFF. I’m ok with that. I already am gave money through my church and I will give during the concert tonight as well. I am from the Seattle Area btw.

    I tried at both 12:15 Am and 5:15 AM, and neither one worked. It was a “Cities” venue category, which probably shouldn’t matter.
    Anyway, others here are saying that it works now, so I’ll give it a try again in a while. I was hoping to be one of the people whose check-in was one of the ones that prompted the donation, but I’ll settle for just the odd-looking badge . . .

    Finally got it. I don’t know whether it was a time issue or whether the earlier two tries had been a 2d checkin to the same venue (I checked in, then realized I forgot the shout so I did it again.) This time I shouted the first time I checked in to a different venue. Anyway, great cause – I am thankful my home at the NJ shore was virtually undamaged but my hat’s off to Samsung and I hope this goes a long way towards helping the people who weren’t so lucky.
