Two new celebrities on foursquare

As Twitter has grown, one of its greatest drivers has been adoption by celebrities. Ashton Kutcher has been on foursquare for more than a year, but few other celebrities have followed. Over the past few days foursquare has seen two celebrities join the service that could bring their devoted fans along for the ride.

Last week Eliza Dushku joined up. She has yet to check in anywhere or offer any tips, but she’s already amassed 800 followers.

The biggest catch, though, is the addition of Shaquille O’Neal tonight. With 3.5 million Twitter followers, O’Neal could bring a lot of new users to foursquare who are interested in following him and the places he recommends.

He checked in from Boston’s TD Garden arena, home of the Boston Celtics, tonight and shouted “im da real mayor of dis joint.” He also left one of the best foursquare tips ever:

when i dunk, standup n shout “mayor n da house”

Celebrities on foursquare get a profile that can be followed twitter-style rather than friended. When they check in they can choose to share the checkin with their friends or with their followers, adding a nice extra layer of privacy.
