Line the Streets of the Olympic Torch Relay for a foursquare badge

The Olympic Torch begins its journey across the UK today, visiting (seemingly) every city, village, and wide spot in the road. Fans will be lining the streets the whole way, and when they do, they can check in to earn the special London 2012 Olympic Torch Relay badge.

To unlock the badge, you’ll need to first be following London 2012 on foursquare. When the torch relay reaches your city, check in to your nearest Olympic Torch Relay venue. The unlock text for the badge reads:

 8,000 miles. 8,000 stories. From Land’s End to Lerwick, Lowestoft to Enniskillen, you’re somewhere on the London 2012 Olympic Torch Relay route. Find out when the Flame is coming and line the streets to cheer on your local Torchbearers! This is your moment to shine.

You can keep up with the relay and find detailed maps using the new London 2012 Join In app for iPhone or Android. It will serve as a spectator guide throughout the games, with schedules, detailed venue information and more. You’ll even be able to check in with foursquare.

This is the first Summer Olympics to arrive since the launch of foursquare in 2009. We expect to see several more badges launched around the games.

Foursquare badge aside, I hope you’ll find a way to see the torch if it visits your town. I had the opportunity to see it in the run-up to the Salt Lake City games in 2002 and it was quite a moving experience.

    Yay, this comes through a town around 9 miles away so I’ll be getting this!!

    So many location based badges. Not enough expertise ones. Foursquare NEVER thinks of users who stay in Africa. Or we don’t count?

      Uk users used to say the same, as have people in other countries – it will happen in time – in the grand scheme of things foursquare is still very new. Asking if you count or not it’s a bit silly.
      Have you contacted foursquare about it? Have you encouraged your friends to join? Have you held meetups? They always welcome input from global users and there more users there are, the louder the shout.
      This is the Olympics, it’s once every 4 years, even the USA (non jumpers) won’t be able to get this one *smug face* ;)

    Great news – the torch is passing the end of my street in a few weeks :) How do we know which venues are tagged as Olympic Torch Venues?

      The venues are already live Brian so just do a search on foursquare for Olympic Torch Relay and that will be it, they aren’t categorised yet but I’m asking staff what the best category would be for them before I get word around to all fellow UK SU’s to cat their local ones.
