The Colonel would be proud of foursquare’s newest badge
Foursquare launched a new badge this afternoon that would warm Colonel Sanders’ heart — Fried Check-in. It marks 10 checkins at a fried chicken restaurant.
The unlock text reads:
Battered up! That’s 10+ fried chicken outings for you! I believe the technical term for that is Poultry In Motion.
What do you think of the new badge?

Sweet, I practically live in KFC so I’ll get this in no time.
How long has Fried Chicken Joint even been a category? I know I never noticed it before because there are a couple big chicken restaurants down here that I always had to classify as Southern & Soul Food. Hmm. I’ve added this category now, but I’m wondering if it’ll still count.
SU’S better get to work and really catagorize kfcs and. Popeye’s to fried chicken rather than fast food.
This! I’m 4 away but my KFC is list as fast food
Curse only being a SU level 1.
Call me a category curmudgeon, but I’m not a fan of recategorizing venues just to make a badge easier to earn. If a business is predominantly a fast food joint, it should stay that way. (Besides…if I’m searching for a good burger joint in a city, the last thing I want is to get a billion McDonald’s locations.)
If this forces users to try harder than just hitting all the KFC’s they can, all the better. Go find some of your city’s REAL fried chicken joints!
P.S. – If foursquare would allow badges like this one to take more than just the primary category into account, I’d be very okay with that.
I agree with you on McDonald’s, but I think KFC belongs in the fried chicken category without a doubt. I’m mean it is 2/3 of their name (or at least it was)
The weird thing is that some badges do allow for secondary categories. Pizzaiolo is one off the top of my head. Ziggy’s Wagon, though, doesn’t.
I have to agree with Spam. KFC is primarily a fast food place and not a fried chicken joint. It’s kinda like Taco Bell is not a taco place, despite people categorizing it as such. And, we need to be consistent with categorizing venues. No flippy floppy.
Im going with C.Thompson on this one as well… Its not called Kentucky Fried Food… Its called Fried Chicken… If you label every chicken franchise as “fast food”, what makes KFC any different then a Ma & Pa chicken shack?!? Is it the franchise aspect that makes it fast food? Because if that’s the case… why have any categories for food? If 75% of any one restaurants menu is chicken, that is fried, Id say.. no matter what your opinion of genetically altered fried chicken bits are…. They’re still serving up “fried chicken”… therein making it a place worthy of the category of “Fried Chicken Joint”
Ahhh… A new core badge.
Im sure the fried food entrepreneurs of the world will also be happy.
And even though it could be a year before I eat/checkin at 10 places, still nice to see a non sponsored badge.
Retroactive possibilities make me want grease
Popeyes near me is classified under “fast food,” but I added “fried chicken” as a tag. I’ll have to eat another nine greasy meals to see if that action works/worked . . .
This new badge is LAME…lol…. I mean, who really wants to clog their arteries with the grease from friend chicken? LMAO>..
For a company that tries to promote healthy habits with so many of their badges, I am a little surprised to see it. I think, though, that they were more interested in the fun play on words with checkin/chicken.
wonder if you have to checkin in ten different fried chicken joints or can you check in one fried chicken joint ten times?
KFC, Church’s, Popeyes are all Fried Chicken Joints. There really is no valid argument otherwise. One can say, go get some real chicken at Dodges or whatever local joint, but that doesn’t change the fact that the major franchises are fried chicken ‘restaurants’. In fact, for real fried chicken, one is likely going to have to go to a soul food place, where it would be absolutely BS to label the whole restaurant and menu as a ‘Fried Chicken Joint’. SU’s need to get busy, and 4sq needs to add more SU’s to non-metro areas.
Does this mean check-ins at 10 different fried chicken joints, or 10 check-ins at only one fried chicken joint? thanks!
This badge is for “the birds”. J/K. Actually cool. Makes me wanna go for that chicken sandwich KFC’s been promoting for over a year now. Does old checkins count towards the 10?
Would Chick-fil-A fall under the fried chicken category?
tempted to say fried chicken for chick-fil-a but as I was thinking about it, I think any restaurant that has a drive thru should not be classified as fried chicken. That’s a fast food restaurant plain and simple.
The guy linked for this new Foursquare badge is a dude in Bali… That Indonesian fried chicken is great huh. I’m getting tired of the fraud on foursq.
Problems with categorization aside I don’t think I’ll be earning this badge anytime soon.
I think the categorization question is a valid one, is a “fried chicken” place a place that’s primary focus is fried chicken (which would include KFC and Ckick-Fil-A) or are we excluding chains and saying only mom & pop places count?
What about places that are known for their chicken but are currently categorized as something else. Perfect example is https://foursquare.com/venue/48545 this place has a giant fired chicken bucket on the top of their sign and what they are famous for.
OH and IMO all the chain places like KFC should be categorized as Fired Chicken, just like SubWay should be categorized as Sandwich Place.
Just heard from a SU (Andrew Lillie) that foursquare support said KFCs should be categorized as Fried Chicken Joints. Here is where I got this information: http://aboutfoursquare.com/forum/viewtopic.php?f=2&t=464#p1602. I hope this helps!
Would be really cool to see a veggie proud type of badge sometime soon…
Anyone know if it’s 10 x checkin at the same venue or 10 x checkin at “fried chicken joint” ?
This is a great badge but nearly impossible to get as most Popeye’s & KFC’s are not listed as Fried Chicken Joints.
There really needs to be more Super Users that have the ability to change these.
There will be more superusers very soon.
