TBD.com adds crowd sourced restaurant reviews to foursquare
Today marks the launch of TBD.com, a social-media-driven local news site based in Washington, DC, brought to us by the same company that developed Politico. They’ve also launched a foursquare profile that is populated mostly with restaurant reviews from their network of local bloggers.
Restaurant reviews are nothing new to foursquare, they’ve been done before by the Wall Street Journal, Seattle Time and others. “I feel ours is special, however, in that it highlights the work of (and drives traffic to) our network of local food bloggers as opposed to on-staff critics. We saw this page as an opportunity to raise the profile of our Community Partners and their blogs – while also providing a (hopefully helpful) service to our Foursquare friends,” says TBD.com Social Media Producer Mandy Jenkins.
TBD.com plans to make foursquare a big part of their social media strategy in the future, and you can bet they will. Jenkins is an early adopter of foursquare and other location-based networks who literally got hired by wowing her future employer with her knowledge of foursquare. At the time, Community Engagement Director Steve Buttry wrote:
I saw good signs even before she reached the office. She checked in from the Metro station nearby about 20 minutes before the interview, then from a nearby coffee shop. When I commented on that as I met her in the lobby of our offices, she told me she was using the beta of check.in, a new service that checks you in on multiple location-based platforms at once. There’s a good interviewing tip for you: If you’re applying for a social media job, start the interview right by telling the prospective boss even before you sit down that you’re using something he’s never heard of. She also nailed the interview and now she has the job.
It will be interesting to see how TBD uses foursquare in the future. Follow them now for great tips around Washington, DC.

Thanks for noting our launch and our interest in Foursquare. We’ll be looking for more ways to use Foursquare and other social platforms to engage our community.
Here’s how good Mandy Jenkins is: When I checked in at USA Today for the Mashable road show last week, “Mandy J” offered a tip about the cushy toilet paper in the women’s restrooms at Gannett headquarters next door (I didn’t check it out). She’s seeding the DC area with tips on everything.
