Should foursquare keep stand-alone shouts?
Yesterday’s update to the foursquare iPhone app included a lot of improvements, but it was also missing a feature found in previous versions: the stand-alone shout button. In foursquare’s blog post about the update, they explained the removal like this:
…with this release, we’re retiring the stand-alone shout button. Since foursquare is ultimately location-based, we decided that shouts should always be attached to a check-in. From now on, if you want to shout, just enter your text when you’re checking in someplace (millions of you do, every day). Though a bunch of us here at HQ were also bummed about the loss, we found it lays the groundwork for better things in the future.
A discussion has erupted on Twitter today around what I’m calling Shoutgate. It turns out a lot of users are upset about the removal of the shout button (which allowed users to post a sort of status update that wasn’t tied to a location or checkin).
Personally, I don’t think I ever used the stand-alone shout button inside the foursquare app to post a shout that wasn’t tied to a location on my personal account. The About Foursquare account is a different matter. I often use stand-alone shouts (via Tweetdeck) to announce new blog posts, figuring that foursquare users who follow About Foursquare would be interested in seeing news about foursquare within the service itself.
All those shouts could have been tied to a location (Tweetdeck has that capability built in), but it was simply easier to post them with no location attached. Starting yesterday, I began tying all About Foursquare shouts to a location, whether I’m physically there or not (like this one). I think this is an appropriate use of “jumping” for brands.
Dwayne Kilbourne is one user upset by the change. “I understand why but completely dislike it (unless foursquare is willing to up caps)… I like to post foursquare tips and some blog post links,” he said on Twitter.
For now, stand-alone shouts have only been removed from the iOS version of the app. Presumably they’ll be removed from the Android and Blackberry versions as those are updated with the latest changes. It’s unknown if support for them will be completely removed from the API. UPDATE: Foursquare head of product Alex Rainert confirms in the comments that they have no plans to remove stand-alone shout support from the API.
I, for one, won’t miss the stand-alone shouts. If foursquare thinks “it lays the groundwork for better things in the future,” then I have no problem with removing them from the app. Foursquare is, after all, a location-based network, so it makes sense that everything you do there should be tied to a physical location.
With that said, it’s time to turn it over to you. What do you think about this change?

nope. There’s no need for it
Hey all!
Just wanted to hop in and confirm that there are no plans to remove it from the API so developers can still leverage the feature in their apps, we’re just stripping it out of our core experience and we feel confident that the whole foursquare experience will be better for it.

Great! Thanks for the update, Alex!
While I won’t miss it too badly, there were occasions where a stand-alone shout was appropriate (unlocking the Groundhog Day badge while being someplace you wouldn’t necessarily want to check in, for example).
This is pretty much my position, I’ve used the shout feature a few times but it really doesn’t add much to the experience.
I guess my only concern is people may add shouts to checkins where the shout really doesn’t have anything to do with the venue or visit.
Maybe people will create venues to check into when they want to shout? Maybe they will call it “Shoutpocalypse”
To be honest, I have never understood what stand-alone shouts were for, so I won’t try to have an opinion about whether or not they should exist. But I sure won’t miss them.
What will happen to the mile high club badge? Can’t check in at 30,000 ft, only way to unlock before was via shouts…
I think the badge unlocks from the check-in now. I can’t remember how it was when I unlocked it, but recently when signing up for the Go-Go in-flight Wi-Fi service on Delta, the page that tells you “You are now connected” shows you the Mile High Badge and a link or button that takes you to the m.foursquare.com page where you can then check-in to the Go-Go location, which on the East Coast is tied to the ATL airport & SEA-TAC on the West Coast (if I am correct). Either way, make sure you check-in shortly after take off, if you check-in during the middle of the flight and then check-in to the airport when you land, it gives you the message along the lines of “superhuman speed, no points awarded”… (it will tell you where the Go-Go check-in location is based out of.
Have never used it to my recollection… but I’m pretty sure this is what Twitter is for. Or Facebook status updates.
Foursquare is about location. If you’re shouting about a location, you should be at that location shouting it.
Good riddance!

Add me to the vocal list of folks who find removal of the ‘shout’ feature to be a sad step backward for Foursquare.
While I agree (and use) the core function of Foursquare as a location based tool, the inability to use the (truly unobtrusive) shout button for special messaging, has me and many others inconveniently closing the Foursquare app to make simple updates that are either not location based (e.g. enroute work, anyone want to go to Ernie’s Bar?) – and *especially* the ones I don’t happen to wish to share a location for (“home”).
Rather than being an application at the center of my geo-specific and social *status*, I now have to toggle between applications. Sorry Foursquare, you’ve had a foothold on me with an omnipotent app, and I can’t see your removal of a versatile feature as an improvement.
So, “shout” is only available through APIs but not to the majority of foursquare users.. Why? I keep seeing offers being shouted out by businesses, why not normal users too..
Either remove it completely or bring it back.. Thanks
Stand-alone shouting was fun to unlock certain badges, like 16 Candles or I’m on a boat, where you simply had to shout rather than check in in order to earn the badge. Also nice in case there’s something I can earn by shouting but forget to during the check-in…
