Share photos with all your social networks with Instagram
A new app for the iPhone, Instagram, is all about sharing your memories with your friends through a continuous stream of photos. It includes very basic foursquare integration to let you tag each photo with a location and check you in.
Instagram lets you take a photo and then apply one of their attractive filters before you upload it to your social networks, including Facebook, Twitter, Flickr, Tumblr and foursquare. You can choose to view a stream of the most popular photos or the photos shared by your friends. You can, of course, comment on and “like” each photo. The mobile app and website are both beautifully designed and very easy to use.
The foursquare integration is very basic. You choose your location from a list of nearby foursquare venues in the “where” field. Sending the photo to foursquare only checks you in, there’s no link to the photo sent in the shout.
When a photo with an attached location is uploaded to Twitter, only the name of the location is shared (i.e., “@ Starbucks”). Facebook posts at least get the address of the venue attached, if it’s available. There’s no indication of the location when you view the photo on the instagr.am website. Clicking the location attached to a photo from within the mobile app, though, takes you to a nice place page with a map of the venue and any photos that have been taken there.
Overall Instagram is a nice app that makes it very easy to add filters and share photos with your social networks all in one step. Hopefully future versions of their website will have location information integrated and a link to the photo will be passed to foursquare as a shout (or, even better, uploaded to foursquare when they finally release photo sharing).
