Foursquare launches two new city badges: New Orleans and São Paulo
With the launch of foursquare’s city badges last Friday, they promised to add many more city badges. They’ve followed up on that pledge in short order today by launching two more badges. One for São Paulo, Brazil and the other for New Orleans, Louisiana, making it the first American city to get it’s own badge (in the new series).
As with the previous badges, they’ve created a list of recommended venues for New Orleans and São Paulo. Both badges can be earned by checking in at five of the recommended spots in their respective cities.
The São Paulo badge is named Sampa, the unlock text reads:
You’ve got the looks of a verdadeira Paulista! Quão legal. El mar de edifÃcios doesn’t intimidate you, nor do the crowds en la Praça da Liberdade. And forget following— like this metropolis movimentada, you’re always setting the trends. Non dvcor, dvco!
New Orleans’ badge is called Big Easy. Its unlock text reads:
From po’boys on Bourbon Street to jazz at d.b.a., you’ve got N’awlins covered like steamboats on the Mississippi. We bet you live every day like Fat Tuesday. Or in the words of Weezy, you got cake every day like it’s yo birthday. Now go eat some pralines!
What do you think of the two new badges? Which is your favorite city badge so far?

Obrigada!
In Brasil we speak PORTUGUESE, not spanish…….4sq fuckin* fail
The unlock text for the Sao Paulo badge need a serious review.
They probably thought it was simply a matter of pronunciation, as if it were some sort of ‘dialect’/accent. I hope they get someone who speaks proper Brazilian Portuguese instead of a a European Portuguese speaker, so they seriously fix it.
I can totally understand how this mistake can be offensive. Now I think I should’ve waited until I forwarded the news to friends.
Great badge. Terrible text. A mix of Spanish and European Portuguese. “Quão legal!” should be “Que legal!”, “El mar” should be “O mar” and “en la” should be “na”.
Don’t get me wrong. Love the badge. But it’s a bit embarrasing for the Foursquare team to put it out with those big mistakes.
C’mon guys… We Brazilians need to learn how to view the positive aspect of this badge… For me its like a trophy that awards our userbase and encourages new users to get into foursquare, because THEY DO care about our community!
They could’ve chosen million other cities before São Paulo, but they didn’t… Think Indonesia, Thailand, etc… So, please!
São Paulo is the financial capital of Brazil and it deserves the badges, BUT, 4sq missed big time by not getting a badge for Rio de Janeiro, which is undoubtedly the most famous city in Brazil with “carnaval”, “Samba Schools”, “Samba Parade”, Sugar Loaf Mountain, Christ The Redeemer, Copacabana and Ipanema Beaches, Maracanan stadium, etc.
As a native Brazilian, I happy for the badge.
I wouldn’t worry. There’s no rule that says one country can only have one city badge.
I know what you mean about the SP versus Rio thing. It’s kind of like having a badge for the Hague or Rotterdam instead of Amsterdam for the Netherlands. But to be fair, Foursquare staff are in NY, which is a blend of what Amsterdam/the Hague/Rotterdam and Rio/SP are, maybe they honestly had no idea. I’m sure they did their best, and even the Spanish text was well-intended (I mean they’re only human, OMG Foursquare is run by humans, who knew). Or the decision was based on the amount of users in SP versus Rio.
I think the reason why they had an SP badge before Jakarta is probably because they didn’t have a clue about venues. I just submitted 60 venues for the Jakarta badge on the suggestion form, yet I still have a feeling I forgot some key locations. I think, design-wise, it would probably be a minimalist badge with the National Monument (Monas) on it.
I’m going to occupy Foursquare headquarters and go on a hunger strike until I get my Jakarta badge. LOL.
Scratch that. Never mind what I said about NY being Amsterdam/the Hague/Rotterdam. The equivalent to the Hague would be D.C. Not that it’s relevant to SP, but D.C. can be touristy and is very badge-worthy too.
Great inittiative guys, the ‘Estaiada’ bridge is a good reference for the city, although there’re others that could be considered.
however, we do speak portuguese here, not spanish, soplease consider changing the words “El” and “en la” by “O” and “na” as well as replace “Quao legal” by “Que legal”
being the only latin american country that speaks portuguese is a strong cultural value that must be considered.
cheers
The Windy City badge is still the coolest city/state badge.
And although I understand how attempting and failing to use proper wording and the valued language could offend some, I think BRUNO RITTER has it right… of all the cities in all the world, you guys got the 2nd city/state badge!! That should count for something!
Is it more offensive to get a badge with improper use of the language, or not get a badge at all?
Because to be honest, when I think about the wide world of foursquare and think of the most populated foursquare using areas, Brazil would have never even made my list… So this badge is actually a surprise..
Im sure foursquare will fix the text..
So enjoy it! Dont dwell on it.
I stand corrected. The Sao Paulo badge is technically the 5th city/state badge.
Still…. Top 5… Thats pretty good.
I dont see a NYC badge yet.
You should see Denis Crowley interview in Paris last week, when he mentioned that Brazil is the fastest growing market for foursquare now. Just wait until the World Soccer Cup comes to Rio de Janeiro in 2014.
Thanks for the badge, but please, fix the badge description.
You’ve got the look of a verdadeiro Paulista! Que legal! O mar de edifÃcios doesn’t intimidate you, nor do the crowds na Praça da Liberdade. And forget following — like this metropolis movimentada, you’re always setting the trends. Non dvcor, dvco!
Thanks again
They’ve changed the text. But instead of following these suggestions they’ve simply removed most of the portuguese parts of it.
“You’ve got the looks of a real Paulistano! Que legal! The concrete jungle doesn’t intimidate you, nor do the crowds at the Praça da Liberdade. And just like this busy metropolis, you’re always setting the trends. Non dvcor, dvco!”
Oh well, I have no idea about when I’ll go back to São Paulo again =/ I’d love to have that badge and I’m pretty sure that I would
About Rio, a badge with Pão de Açucar or Cristo Redentor is a MUST to have, btw when I saw the unlock text my first reaction was: what a failure.
Either way I am proud to have SP badge, cuz I love Brazil
And proud to see that my city has taken place at first three city badges, İstanbul.
You should come and see here too, I loved Avenida Paulista, Praça de Liberdade, Rua 25 de Março, Torre do Banespa (ah what a perfect view SP has there
), Mercado Municipal and everything else
