Foursquare hires PR firm to kickstart consumer and business education efforts
According to PRWeek, foursquare has hired Kaplow as their agency of record. One of the PR firm’s first tasks will be an effort to educate businesses and consumers on the benefits of geolocation services and helping to mitigate some of the privacy concerns users may have about joining foursquare.
Up to now, foursquare’s PR efforts have been handled solely by PR manager Erin Gleason. Kaplow was chosen from among seven agencies to handle foursquare’s messaging, media relations and education efforts. “We felt that because we were so short staffed, we weren’t able to tell the story we want to,†Gleason told PRWeek.
Gleason said they chose Kaplow based on their experience with PR for both technology and consumer brands, and their ability to work from both coasts. Skype is another of Kaplow’s major accounts.
Having a PR team focused on educating consumers and businesses is a good way to use the money from foursquare’s latest round of investments. Even with the launch of Facebook Places, it’s clear that many people still don’t understand the purpose of geolocation services.

As an avid follower and advocate of Foursquare, as well as student about to graduate from PR this coming Spring, I am totally pumped with the firm they selected. This is the step they need that will help to throw them further into the limelight of the publics’ eye.
Don’t be surprised if we start seeing a mass of downtime here and there – in the near future – on account of the massive number of new users activating their account. This shit is going to hit the fan and we should be proud that we have been apart of something like this.

This is great news, especially for those of us who work in an agency and are constantly making recommendations to our clients. Getting businesses and the general public educated/aware of the benefits of Foursquare is only going to help us all in the long-run.
