Official foursquare app for WP7 re-released after complete redesign
The official version of foursquare for Windows Phone 7 was re-released last night, following a two month absence from the Windows Mobile Marketplace. The app has been completely redesigned and brings many of foursquare’s newest features to the WP7 platform for the first time — in the official app, at least.
For foursquare users on other platforms, the design is a radical departure from what you’re used to seeing. It fits in nicely, however, with the Metro styling of Windows Phone 7.
As you can see in the screenshots, it includes features like Explore and the new leaderboard. According to WP Central (who broke the news last night), also included is a live tile that can show your friends’ recent checkins or leaderboard updates, making it a handy tool for seeing your friends’ locations at a glance.
Reader Tim Gonsalves, who sent in the attached screenshots (thanks!), wrote a brief review after testing out the app:
It’s a pretty robust app, pretty much on-par with the offerings on Android and iOS, just in a very different style (of course to match the WP7 style). It is a bit slow sometimes, and I think it may be a bit too flashy so I’m probably gonna stick with 4th & Mayor, but keep this one installed anyway just for fun.
4th and Mayor is a third-party foursquare app for WP7 built by Silverlight developer Jeff Wilcox. Since the official app was removed from the Marketplace in May, foursquare has pointed WP7 users to 4th and Mayor since it was much more capable. It was also updated to version 2 earlier this week.
The official app was developed by Mircosoft in collaboration with the foursquare team. You can read more about the development process on the Microsoft on ISVs blog.
So, WP7 users, what do you think of the app? Is it good enough to replace 4th and Mayor for you?

It seems like the 4sq Devs didn’t learn from the mistakes of other applications on the platform.
From the screen captures seen above, everything is too cluttered. Fonts are too small in some places creating visual contrast and readability issues. Also too much screen real estate is being taken up by a massive logo.
It also looks like there’s too much left/right scrolling going on. Venues are a list of information – yet they’ve chosen to lay them out like tiles in a two row configuration that makes it harder to read, scan through them for information.
Sorry, but based on what I’m seeing here I’d have no problems putting money down on 4th and Mayor keeping the top spot. They’ve spent too much time and effort on design, and seem to have completely ignored form and function needs.
Yeah, it’s a bit too flashy, busy and overdone, but its a nice attempt and it’s still far better than what they first came out with so long ago.
They definitely shouldn’t have used the panorama view for display venues to check in to. Some fonts are too small, other fonts are too big or bulky. It would have been nice to see the new focus on check-ins carry over to this app, instead of some huge, useless list of places. It can be bypassed though; simply clicking on “more” will bring you to a more useful view of the venues around you.
Still 4th & Mayor is gonna be my preferred client.

The one thing the new 4sq app has over 4th and Mayor is the ability to add a new place. But agreed its laggy and checking in is not as quick as 4th&M. The Live Tile is nice but personally I don’t care about points. A Live Tile showing your last check-in or even the number of check-ins in the past 24 hours would be much more useful.
