What’s better than a mayor on foursquare? The President on foursquare
Every once in a while I get to the end of a day covering foursquare and I think “this is one of those days we’ll look back at down the road and see as a turning point for foursquare.” Today has been one of those days. First foursquare released their new lists feature, which is almost certain to be a game-changer that sets it apart from other check-in services (I’m looking at you Facebook), then tonight the White House announced that the President was joining foursquare.
Starting with President Obama’s Rural Tour across the Midwest this week, you’ll be able to follow the President on foursquare and see the places he checks in. In a blog post announcing their latest foray into social media, the White House says they’ll also be leaving tips about the White House and the President’s activities.
They’ve already started with a tip regarding President Obama’s stop in Cannon Falls, MN today:
President Obama discussed ways to grow the economy and strengthen the middle class with a crowd of 500 people at Hannah’s Bend Park on the first stop of his economic bus tour across the Midwest.Read more.
Foursquare joins the White House’s growing roster of social media networks. They’ve previously started profiles on Twitter, Facebook and LinkedIn. At about 12 million users, foursquare is by far the smallest of the group.
Regardless of your political leanings, if you’re a foursquare fan you have to recognize the significance of the President joining the service. It’s a big step for foursquare to be counted among the ranks of the big social media powers.

From what I read, he cannot check-in like normal users do… it is not an issue with the security concerns; instead, it is a matter of account type (new brand pages cannot check-in, huh?)! Thus, he will not become the mayor of the White House (not that he is there EVERY day… a staffer could easily be the mayor of that place) or the Oval Office ~ check out this story ==>> http://technolog.msnbc.msn.com/_news/2011/08/16/7386737-obama-joins-foursquare-isnt-even-mayor-of-oval-office
Well, it’s kinda accurate. Checking in a new brand page on mobile is possible, but a pain in the ass at this point.
Good to know…
Yes, but the White House tipped venue is a duplicate venue and didn’t have official address or phone information. I am an Iowa 4sq user so I went in to double check just in case and made the cleanups. A staffer might have been using a mobile phone to make some of the venues and changes…
LOL! That is funny! Nice catch!
