For Nokia S60 users, there’s good news and bad news
Ever since foursquare started warning users that they’d be shutting down the original version of their API, users on the Nokia S60 platform have become increasingly worried. Their app was built on the old API and constantly showed a shout from “Jimmy Foursquare” that their app would no longer function after this Sunday. Today there’s an update (v1.2.9), but it contains both good and bad news.
First the good news: the app will continue to work after August 1. It’s based on version 2 of the API, which was unveiled last December.
The bad news: it includes none of the improvements found in the new API like Explore, photos (despite being mentioned in the changelog) or comments. In fact, it actually loses a feature. The leaderboard is no longer included in any form (you can see how many points you earn with each checkin).
There might be more good news on the horizon, though. I suspect this version is just a stopgap measure to get Symbian users past the August 1 deadline. The video touting the S40 version appears to also show a completely redesigned S60 version that includes Explore and other features. I’ve reached out to foursquare and will update this post when I learn more.
Hopefully this isn’t the final update for Nokia’s foursquare edition. Despite their declining marketshare worldwide (and almost non-existent marketshare in the US), Nokia is still a very powerful player, especially in the European market. The S60 app isn’t built by foursquare, but promoting it as the official app means foursquare is ultimately responsible for it in the eyes of users. Damaging their brand by neglecting an important platform with a subpar app could hurt their long-term growth in Europe.

the one thing i don’t get is why this ‘upgrade’ has actually downgraded some features that were in the previous version.
when i check in now, i can’t see how many days i’ve been here in the last 2 months, i can’t see who the mayor is, and i can’t see how many days until i become mayor.
i don’t see why they had to take those things out. and knowing nokia, it’ll be awhile until another update with all the features.
sry for the double post. you can delete one.
The other issue i have noticed, aside from the leaderboard, now it is logging me in a whole different time zone. Example: i arrive home. I check in. It shows up to my friends as ’1 minute ago’ or whatever, but on my app it says ’3 hours ago’
My phone time zone is fine, fyi, and it only started when the app got ‘updated’
Nokia & foursquare need to get their stuff together and actually UPdate the app.
I noticed the same thing and assumed I’d just missed a setting somewhere.
Let’s hope that they fix this. The leaderboard not being there isn’t a huge deal (really) but 3 hr time shift? Not cool
@vanessa: I have the same problem with the new app.. there is a 3-hour timeshift.
And two days ago Gravity updated it’s API to new version too. Now it’s also shows points, name of an app using which you’ve checked and much more.
