Next month, 43 European nations will come together to compete in the Eurovision Song Contest in Dusseldorf, Germany. As the official airline partner, Lufthansa has stepped up with a special foursquare badge to mark the occasion.
Users will be able to earn the Lufthansa Eurovision Song Contest badge by following Lufthansa and checking in twice at either airports served by Lufthansa in participating Eurovision countries or viewing-party locations around the world.
You can search the list of parties on Lufthansa’s Eurovision micro site. If you’re hosting a viewing party, you can add it to the list of eligible locations via a tie-in with the foursquare API. The list becomes final on May 9, so you’ll need to hurry to get your party listed.
In addition, you can pick up a fan package at the public viewing party in Düsseldorf by showing your foursquare checkin to the Lufthansa promotions team.
Each participating country is allowed one entry into the Eurovision Song Contest each year. After all the acts have performed, each country gets to vote on which of the other countries’ acts they think was the best. The winner gets bragging rights — and the opportunity to host the contest the following year. After Germany’s Lena won last year, Düsseldorf was selected to play host this year from May 12–15.
The Eurovision Song Contest began in 1956 as a way to reunite war-torn Europe. It’s now said to be watched by hundreds of millions of viewers each year, making it the world’s most viewed non-sports event. In some countries, the entrants are selected by a national contest. Those programs are wildly popular, as well.
Lufthansa previously offered a foursquare badge for Oktoberfest.
