If you keep track of your entire life with your iCal calendar, here’s a neat little trick that adds your foursquare history right there alongside your calendar entries. You can go back to any day in your calendar and see exactly where you were and when you were there.
Setting it up is a pretty simple process:
- Visit your foursquare feeds page and right click the ICS link and copy it to your clipboard (don’t download it).
- In iCal, choose Calendar > Subscribe…
- Paste the URL you copied into the Calendar URL field and click subscribe
- The options appear. The only thing you’ll definitely want to do here is set Auto-Refresh to something other than “No.” For my needs, once a day works well, but you may find you want it updated more often. From here you can also set the calendar name and the color with which the entries show up on your calendar. Click OK when you’re done.
Your checkins will now appear as if they were regular calendar entries. When you double-click them, you’ll find that they even include your shout and a link directly to the checkin on foursquare so you can see any comments or photos attached to the checkin. You can turn the checkin feed on or off in the left-hand column under “subscriptions.”
Once the foursquare feed is in iCal, you can also have it synced to your iPhone calendar using the “Info” tab in iTunes.
This is a really helpful way to keep track of your history — both the places you were supposed to be and the places you actually were — in one handy place.
