Head to Chicago for the Windy City badge

20110916-014038.jpgFoursquare today announced their first city-specific core badge in partnership with the City of Chicago. Mayor Rahm Emanuel will also be checking in as he travels around the city.

Users will be able to unlock the Windy City badge by checking in at five of the 20 hotspots that have been identified by the city. The unlock text reads:

From wolfing down Dat Donuts to strolling through Ping Tom Park to worshipping at the altar of MJ, you’ve traversed the City of Big Shoulders, checking in at five Chicago hotspots. And by hot, we mean gusty. They don’t call it the Windy City for nothing.

Mayor Emanuel with be checking in through the ChicagosMayor account. He joins Mayor Michael Bloomberg among the big city mayors eligible to be foursquare mayors.

    I’m not sure I understand how this is a “core” badge… it is very obviously through a partnership with the city – so why not a shield shape?

    I supposed it doesn’t really matter anyway… considering that I’ll pretty much never be able to unlock it, unless I suddenly wake up and feel Indonesian some day.

    Kind of surprised that this is a core badge and not a partner badge. I look forward to getting it though. Getting to Chicago is much easier than NYC for me.

    I was surprised that it is a core badge and I don’t have to follow a partner, but a bunch of the original NYC based badges are based on the same concept… maybe this is the beginning of a trend. Come on west coast next!

    I just read in the Chicago Tribune that this one of 5 city badges to come.
    Its not a partner badge because you DONT need to follow the Mayor’s account. Its just an option.
    And when foursquare releases the other city badges, it seems that they have worked with the tourism boards to decide what places will unlock them.
    As someone living in Chicago, I havent been this excited about a badge since ever. Im excited to see what other cities get their own badge.. New York for sure… Im thinkin LA, Phila.. but who knows?
    I know Chicago has a very active foursquare community, and couldnt be happier that the first one debuts here..

    I’d love to see a Gowalla-style system of having badges for each major city. They’d be nice souvenirs for trips and such.

    Nice! Although I wont be coming to Chi-town any time soon. Hopefully I end up on a transfer flight sometime.
