When foursquare rolled out daily deals two weeks ago, one partner was noticeably absent: Groupon. Today they’ve finally added that grandaddy of the daily deal sites to their offerings, along with Groupon’s unique Groupon Now feature.
Rather than offering a deep discount for a day that can be redeemed at any time in the next few months, Groupon Now lets merchants schedule when deals can be redeemed. Doing so allows them to bring in business during their slowest times. A pizza place that’s slammed on Saturdays, for instance, can offer a Groupon Now deal on Tuesdays when they’re least busy, helping to even out demand over the week.
The Groupon Now deals will show up in foursquare’s Explore tab just as other specials do. You’ll be able to purchase the deals directly within the app and present them to the merchant for redemption at the appointed time. Unlike other Groupon deals, if you’re not able to redeem the deal before it expires, the purchase price will be credited back to your card.
Groupon Now is currently available in 25 cities across the US. Outside of foursquare, they offer their own apps for Android and iPhone to help users find and redeem the deals.
Standard Groupon deals will appear within foursquare, as well, just like previous partners Living Social, Gilt City and others do now. You can purchase those deals within the app, too. Deals are currently showing up for Chicago and should be live for the rest of the US by Sunday.
Incorporating Groupon Now deals into foursquare is a natural fit. People use foursquare to find things to do right now, so it’s a perfect avenue for introducing businesses where they can do something and save money at the same time. The targeted nature of foursquare’s Explore feature should give these offers a high conversion rate, which helps Groupon and foursquare in terms of bringing in revenue.
