Pennsylvania partners with foursquare for a Groundhog Day badge
Punxsutawney Phil, the star of one of the US’ quirkiest holidays, Groundhog Day, is getting his own foursquare badge courtesy of VisitPA. On Groundhog Day, February 2 — Pennsylvania time, of course — you’ll be able to unlock the “PA Groundhog Day” badge by following VisitPA and including the word “groundhog” in a shout. The badge was announced this morning during Phil’s annual appearance at the Pennsylvania Farm Show in Harrisburg.
Groundhog Day is celebrated all across the US and Canada, but it holds a special meaning for Pennsylvanians. It originated amongst the Pennsylvania German community there and the largest Groundhog Day celebration is held each year in Punxsutawney. It’s said that if the groundhog sees his shadow and returns to his burrow, there will be six more weeks of winter. If he doesn’t see his shadow, it signals an early spring.
“There is only one weather-forecasting groundhog: Punxsutawney Phil in the Pennsylvania Wilds. This year, anyone will have the opportunity to earn a badge featuring his likeness from visitPA,†said Mickey Rowley, deputy secretary for tourism. “This is a one-time only opportunity to proudly sport a badge on your virtual chest as we discover the fate of winter.â€
This will be the fourth badge offered by VisitPA. The first three, PA Retail Polka, PA Shooflyer and PA 4 Score & 7 were launched last May and have been unlocked by more than 12,000 foursquare users. They were the first — and still only — US state to offer branded badges. VisitPA considers them successful enough that they recently extended their partnership with foursquare. They’ve also worked with other tourism groups around the state, like Bucks County and Hershey-Harrisburg, to create their own branded pages.
What do you think of the Groundhog Day badge?

Awesome!! I also didn’t know that VisitPA had exclusive badges or the only State Tourism Office using foursquare. Wish my state did.
Very cool! I’m planning to go to Punxy for Groundhog Day this year anyway!
Glad my state jumped on board so early!
Now this is a much better badge than a Jersey Shore or a RuPaul badge.
Nothing wrong with the Jersey Shore badge, Josh.
For the record, I unlocked it by accident.
Very interesting use of foursquare badges by State tourism body. I thought California would be ahead in this matter though
Is this badge unlockable by anyone in the world?
Yes, it’s available everywhere!
awesome!
So you can unlock it by shouting “groundhog” on Feb 2nd while being friends with visitPA right? No need to be in actual PA to unlock, right?
Yep, that sounds about right.
Mike, Yep you have it right. You have to follow us (visitpa) on Foursquare then when you check in anywhere on February 2nd and shout groundhog you will get the badge. Remember the badge will “turn on” at 12:01am PAwilds Time (EST). and “turn off” at 11.59pm.
Excellent, thanks for the reply!
Can this badge be unlocked anywhere or is it a PA specific badge?
See comment #10 from Richard.
This will go well with the couple VisitPA badges I unlocked last month!

I just tweeted this to my state of Arizona. I hope they start doing the same thing. What a novel idea!
The only visitPA badge I haven’t unlocked is the one for visiting the landmarks. I drive by them all the time, but being a local I haven’t stopped in a while. Trying to play fair.
I’ll get it, but I’m also going to point out that this will further encourage people who think there should be a badge for every pseudo-holiday listed on their dime-store calendars.
I give it about 2 weeks before people start asking Foursquare if there’s a Valentine’s Day badge.
Good point, Michael. So, when they have badges for every holiday, what happens the next Groundhog day? Will there be different versions of the badges (i.e., Groundhog Day 2011 badge, 2012, etc.).

Oh wait… I’m Bill Murphy not Bill Murray… my bad!
Wow, Michael Bauser sure is a ray of friggin’ sunshine like usual…
…and he’s perfectly content to get the halloween, christmas and birthday badges despite his narcissistic complaints about having badges for every holiday, etc.. Want to really impress us? Delete your badges.
whats the gmt for Pa?
GMT for PA is -5, so you will be able to unlock the badge at 5:01am GMT on February 2nd.
There should be a special reward for those who are actually on-site and unlock the badge at the venue during the ceremony on 2/2, as I stated in Facebook comment. Recent example is swag bag at CES. If you are reading comments visitPA, do this and I will drive there!
Agreed! I think showing the badge should get some cool memento at the Punxsutawney celebration.
Not sure, but we will chat with the folks in Punxsutawney. We are hoping folks will be able to get a Super Swarm or maybe even a Super Duper Swarm badge if they check in on the Knob for Groundhog Day. We have also tagged Gobbler’s Knob as one of our 4 Score & 7 badge check-in spots.
I’d love to go to Punxsutawney, PA one day for this celebration, after-all, Feb 2nd is my birthday.
This is ADORABLE!
A bit unrelated but I have to say it: I still think there should’ve been a Thanksgiving badge (it’s pretty much a secularist holiday now anyway). I don’t live in the States anymore but I still celebrate Thanksgiving as [my personal way to] honor immigrants. Foursquare is all about travel and immigrants travel–I don’t think it’s pushing too far. Just saying!
Make sure to check-in… Or be doomed to repeat the day over.
The PA I ALSO cant unlock .><
Leslie, make sure you are following visitPA before you check in at the various spots. You will need 3 check-ins to different venues to get one of our PA badges. The new groundhog badge is different, see above on how that works. Thanks for exploring!
yes ! i follow visitPA but if i check in the venue always say far from me
i follow visitPA to check in , but cant unlock
the badges ,and always say a litter far from me. i from malaysia ! thanks !
unlocked from Italy, so it does work
It’s not working for me. I followed VisitPA on Foursquare and shouted Groundhog and haven’t received a badge.
Not working for me in Oklahoma.
