Get out into the great outdoors for foursquare’s latest badge
Foursquare badges are starting to look even more like the Boy Scout badges I remember. Earlier today we saw one that was reminiscent of the Swimming merit badge and now we have one that immediately reminds me of the Camping merit badge. It’s called Great Outdoors and started appearing this afternoon.
The unlock text reads:
Welcome to the Great Outdoors! Behold Mother Nature’s true beauty. Now if only she’d throw a double rainbow up in this piece.
Of course, when I earned the Camping merit badge, they didn’t mention anything about the infamous double rainbow video, but I think the concept is basically the same.
Stand by for gratuitous use of said double rainbow video:
/Thanks to Byron Brewer for the tip!

Nice. So, what are the criteria for unlocking this badge?
I don’t know. I’m sure the Indonesians will have it figured out shortly.
+1
Wish they would have introduced these badges at the start of the summer and not at the end of it.
Probably involves checking into some campground or state park… I would think.
My gf just unlocked it by checking into Lincoln center. WTF?
The badges are based solely on categories. Lincoln Center is categorized as a Plaza/Square for some reason.
yep – I wound up getting the swimmies and great outdoors badge when I checked into the beach yesterday
Looks like it’s probably a check-in to a location that is categorized under “Parks and Outdoors”.
And Swimmies looks a little like the old school swimming merit badge of the BSA.
Will the Outdoor badge be available worlwide like the Swimmies? Thanks!
I can’t get this badge even I’ve checked at 10 parks. Why???
I just got mine today after checking into Hawk Mountain Sanctuary near Hamburg, PA.

I got this yesterday checking into a campground. Only category is Campground. No tags.
I’m thinking it takes a bit more than one checkin to something similar though b/c my g/f checked into the same exact venue when I did and did NOT get the badge.
I got it finally. The place that I got categorized “Lake / Pond”.
I’ve tried and tried and can’t unlock it no matter what I do. Help?
I’ve checked in a LOT to trails/campgrounds/state parks/etc and have yet to get this badge. What’s up with this?
Yeah, I’ve checked in at loads of parks, lakes, scenic lookouts, hiking trails and woodland trails over the last few weeks and not a sniff of a badge. Ugh.
Try adding ‘parks’ as a tag.
Yeah, that didn’t work. Sigh.
[...] och Great Outdoors Swimmies ska man få om man checkar in nära vatten. Stränder, dammar, båtar mm skulle jag tro. [...]
Anyone have any luck with this one ? I’ve tried checking in to numerous sub categories on Parks & Outdoors and have yet to unlock it.
The unlock is 10 times to locations categorized as “Parks and Outdoors” or a subcategory herein. The subcategories have to be different from one another as well as the locations have to be different from each other.
Good Luck!
I would love to say that is correct, but i’ve checked into atleast that many with no badge. Parks, Ponds, Hiking Trails, Campgrounds ect….
I have 35 checkins across 11 different park and outdoors categories. No badge.
Any updates to this unlock? Stll haven’t unlocked it with numerous check in’s to supposed venues within the criteria. Very frustrating
No, I’ve had the same problems. Foursquare has looked into it and said there’s nothing wrong with the code. I wish they’d be a little more forthcoming with what it takes to actually unlock the badge.
One of my friends got this badge at the Nevada State Line on the way to Vegas lmao
