Gap stores nationwide are offering a pretty sweet deal to foursquare users: 25% off your purchase just for checking in. You’ll need to hurry, though. The deal is only good today, August 14.
This is an amazing deal just for checking in. We’ve seen discounts this high for mayors before, but never for a user’s first checkin. Running it as a one day only special is a great way to drive some traffic, especially as lots of users check in at malls during the back to school shopping season.
UPDATE (8/15): The Gap special has now been extended to August 22, matching the offer for Twitter and Facebook users. According to foursquare’s Director of Business Development, Tristan Walker:
Our friends at the GAP were so excited abt the 25% off deal yesterday they decided to extend for @foursquare users… for a while
Go!

This promotion is a SCAM. I just came from the local Gap store, where I checked in on FourSquare and showed the sales associate my phone. She rang up my purchase and then told me the discount was only good for Gap credit card holders. I told her this was not mentioned on the promotion or on Foursqurae — it says the discount is good as long as you check in.
It turns out that they’re using the same discount code as their “Black Magic” promotion for current card holders — and that’s how they’re drawing people into the store. It’s bait and switch and false advertising. People should be aware.

It’s far from a scam… I mean, it sucks if your store knows nothing about it, but there is certainly no “scam” about it. And you definitely do not need to be a Gap Card holder to be eligible… I know they are running other promotions right now (Facebook/Twitter also) but again, it is not a scam. If anything you should have asked to speak with the manager. The sales associates usually know jack shit about what is actually happening.

I actually hit up 2 different Gap stores today to take advantage of the special. Sadly neither one seemed to have any clue about the promotion. One of them sort of thought they had heard about “something” like it… but still seemed relatively clueless.
I was able to save about $33 at the first Gap and got some shirts for work. The g/f was unable to find any new pants for work so we went to another Gap < 1 hr away and checked in there too. Saved another $52 there as I got a few more shirts and she found 2 pair of pants.
So there you go Foursquare & Gap, you drove me to spend $250 in your stores today to take advantage of the special. That's after a savings of about $85. I'd call that a win for all of us.

The deal is supposed to run into August 22nd. I went to a GAP this evening to try to use the PROMO code….I handed my cell phone to the cashier and she looked puzzled. Then she said “Oh this is that viral promotion…yeah it’s already been used up…you cannot use the discount. The facebook and Twitter users used the code up already.” She didn’t even look at the phone to see what it said. They should train their employees about these new promotions instead of acting like – oh this is not legit. So they lost my business. In fact not sure if I ever will shop at Gap again. They didn’t even want to listen to me and treated me like I was stupid. Rude worker.
