Digital media retailer FYE (For Your Entertainment) has become the latest store to offer foursquare users a discount just for checking in. Show your unlock screen to the cashier for a 10% discount on any one CD, DVD, Blu-Ray or video game (per customer per day).

To help ensure that cashiers will actually give the discount instead of just giving foursquare users a funny look, the unlock screen includes a coupon code for them to enter. Unfortunately, though, even that didn’t help users during the Gap special. There were numerous reports, even in our comments, of users who were denied the special at checkout. Companies must do a better job of providing their stores at least some guidance regarding foursquare specials, or they risk alienating customers rather than luring them in.
