FourWhere gets a major upgrade; now merges tips from Foursquare, Gowalla and Yelp

If you’re hunting for tips about restaurants, bars or things to do in an area, Foursquare is a great place to look. There are other services out there, though, where users are creating tips and writing reviews. Fourwhere aims to make all those tips available to you in one place by integrating tips from Foursquare, Gowalla and Yelp into a single map. Gowalla and Yelp are new additions to a service that was previously Foursquare-only. The upgrades make the site even more useful than it was before.
Drill into a specific area by searching for it at the top of the site. Right clicking* on the map gives you a menu that lets you either show nearby venues with comments or all venues in the area. If you choose to see venues with comments, Fourwhere will search all three services for tips and display them on the map. You’ll also see a list of all the locations and their comments on the right.
When you click one of the tip bubbles, you’ll see comments from all three services combined in the box, along with an icon to denote which service it came from. Click the user’s picture to get more information about them.
Instead of showing you three dots for venues that are listed on each service, Fourwhere attempts (often successfully) to match the venues and combine them into one, much like the “magical place matching” of check in service check.in. The service is pretty good at matching names that are similar, but may not match exactly, like Bruegger’s Bagels, Brueggers, and Bruegger’s Coffee.
Fourwhere often has trouble with venues that share an address and have been placed on the same spot on the map. The dots for these spots show up stacked on top of each other and lower ones can’t be clicked — and sometimes can’t be seen — even at the highest zoom levels. This isn’t a game breaker, but something to be aware of when you’re looking at venues in an area.
Give Fourwhere a spin a let us know what you think in the comments.
