Foursquare is primarily meant for people on the go, but occasionally it’s nice to be able to sit at a computer and see what your friends are up to. FoursquareX is a very capable Foursquare client for Mac OS X that lets you check in, see your friends’ checkins and find nearby venues.
FoursquareX consists of two main components, an app that sits in the menu bar and a desktop browser. The menu bar app offers a quick checkin feature with a list of nearby venues and an option to send a separate shout. It also serves to send notifications to Growl, the ubiquitous Mac desktop notification service. You can receive notifications of your friends’ checkins and notifications when other people check in to your current venue, even if they’re not your friend. This is a neat feature if you’re up for meeting someone new you know you have something in common with — Foursquare. You can also receive Growl notifications to remind you to check in when you’re near a Foursquare venue.
The desktop browser is a great tool for visualizing where your friends are. Each of their checkins is shown on a map. You can zoom out to get a picture of where friends have checked in around the world or zoom in to see where most of your friends are hanging out right now. Clicking the checkin in the left column will show more details. You can also see nearby venues on a map in the desktop browser, check out their details and check in to them.
FoursquareX was developed by Eric Butler using the Foursquare API. It’s a beautifully designed app and very powerful. If you’re on a Mac (Snow Leopard only), it’s definitely worth checking out.
