Ben, I know that this is easy to do because the Foursquare API is supporting that data. http://gocrowdless.com is using this for their online things, you are right about that. We are going to work with http://www.geotender.com , they are also doing a lot of stuff with that data. Nice to see this!

They’re actually calculating this for Explore (there’s a “this place is busier than usual” tag), so I’d think it would be fairly easy to surface it on the website and/or app.

Perhaps even more useful would be another line below that showing something like “Busier than normal for this time of day.”

That would be fantastic, both http://gocrowdless.com/ and http://whenshouldivisit.iamdanw.com/ have used that concept on a limited basis – it should be something fairly simple to implement. IMO it’s one of the most useful aspects of the publicly available data.
