Foursquare partners with NFL for Super Bowl Sunday
Foursquare and the NFL have partnered to offer a series of three new badges on Super Bowl Sunday in what’s likely to be foursquare’s highest profile promotion to date.
On Sunday, each foursquare user will see a special “Super Bowl Sunday” venue in the Trending Now section of their foursquare app. Checking in to this venue and shouting about which team they support will unlock either the Steelers or Packers badge.
The third badge is reserved especially for foursquare users who check in at Super Bowl XLV in Dallas. Unlocking any of the badges entitles users to a discount code good for 20% off select merchandise at NFLShop.com. This marks the first time foursquare has incorporated unique discount codes into the unlock message.
These badges are sure to be popular among foursquare users. They’ll likely break the record for single day partner badge unlocks which was set just yesterday by the PA Groundhog Day badge.
As a Bengals fan, I won’t be caught dead with a Steelers badge on my profile, but I’ll be happy to support the Packers in their quest for the Vince Lombardi trophy!

GO PACK GO!!!
Is there a “i don’t give a shit about the super bowl but would like to have another badge – but wait, does it have to have a team on it that i don’t really want to show support for” badge?
Because that’s the one I’d want.
Haha. Sorry, Allan. Maybe next year.
I’ll be honest. I want the Packers to win, but I kind of like the Steelers badge better….. *Waits for someone to ask if shouting both teams unlocks both badges*
It should, just like the Celtics and Lakers one.
Yeah, that’s what I figured.
Allan, you gonna try to go for the “i don’t give a s….. but would to have [2 more] badges…”?
I think to keep a fair balance between teams that I do not care about, I may have to get both badges.
Agreed. It would be the only right thing to do.
Wait, how do I get the Celtics badge??
@Dan Pray that the C’s don’t die of old age, make the Finals again this year and that foursquare partners with the NBA again.
Dude, there should have been one for Chinese New Year. Just sayin’!
Yeah, and it’s ANOTHER US only badge, mannnnnnn, you’re not the ONLY country in the world, jeeeeeeez*
*please note my sarcasm
Yea, how about a cricket championship badge!
/rolls eyes
Are you sure the Steelers and Packers badges are U.S.-only? I haven’t seen that stated specifically anywhere…
Sassy, it’s not U.S. specific. The Super Bowl is the second most viewed yearly sporting event in the world being only the UEFA Champions League Final.
Sure, American Football is only about the 10th most popular sport in the U.K., but there’s still a huge following.
I was really a bit surprised we didn’t see one.
I hope foursquare realizes they used the wrong color for part of the Packers logo… the G should be white.
You’d think Partner Badges would be approved by the partner. Might not be Foursquare’s fault.
Voila! Foursquare has fixed the logo!
If only it had been last year! Would’ve loved to have a Saints badge, but hey, maybe next year!
Agreed! That would have been a heck of a lot better to have in my Trophy Case.
Guess we just gotta hope even harder for our teams actually start making it to the Super Bowl. lol.
Despite living in Ravens country, I actually like and respect both of these teams, so I’ll have no problem with having both team’s badges on my profile. (And I must admit, the Steelers one looks especially sharp.)

Anyone want to bet what percentage of people checked into Cowboys Stadium during the game are Indonesians?
I bet more ppl are checked into it than actual seats
But I’m with Chris on this one… as much as I’d really want another badge… and as much as it looks kinda better. I couldn’t stand to have a pitt badge… it would be so wrong… but I am super excited about the potential swarm badges coming out of these as well
Now everyone has to make sure they keep checked in every 3 hours!
why is it so popular with Indonesians? Seems like many of the users are teenie bopper girls. Dont they realize that most of these badges revolve around US centric locations? If 4sq decides to create Indonesia specific badges will we see them less over here?
I can only imagine that this Superbowl “trending venue” will be specially tailored to not unlock the higher-level swarm badges (though I’m positive the actual Dallas venue will unleash an Epic Swarm).
I am wondering about this also.
Interesting that foursquare is positioning this as their “first global venue” (according to their blog) so anyone can check in from anywhere and get a badge or two (or more).
True that, super bowl is watched all over the world. Thanks to foursquare didn’t limit the bedge to the U.S. since I’m mexican and love and enjoy the sport of football.
I’m wondering if the badge will be tied to the Cowboys Stadium venue, or if a new Super Bowl XLV venue will be made official. As a Dallas area SU3, I’ve been monitoring that area pretty closely. I’ve tried to get all the Cowboys Stadium duplicates merged, and at this time they’re all done.
The thing causing the most frustration at this point is all the users creating and checking into “Super Bowl XLV” venues since last weekend. There are dozens of them, all by different users and all with mayors meaning they’re checking in day after day. I close each of them since the game hasn’t actually started yet. 4SQ has stated social events are allowed, which is all good, but you can’t create it a week in advance just so you can be mayor. :-p
I had planned on staying as far from Arlington (the city the “Dallas” stadium is actually in) as possible this weekend, but this badge presents a new variable. I couldn’t care less about sports or the Super Bowl for that matter, but a badge? Maybe have to brave the insane traffic and just consider it an all-day event since that’s likely how bad the traffic will be. Now…to decide which of the two teams to get the badge for. Hmm.
I braved the Black Friday traffic for a Toys R Us badge… but having gone to Penn State and seen game day traffic first hand for a number of years at a stadium that holds >100k, there’s no way you’d get me near that place JUST to get a badge.
Normally I would agree, and there’s still a good chance my better judgment will talk me out of it by Sunday, but the possibility of not just the Super Bowl badge but a potential Epic Swarm might just do it for me. I refuse to check-in from home even though I’m in the same area, so I may carpool with some friends and grab a couple CDs and throw a movie on the iPad, and just sit in traffic to drive by and take some pictures and check-in. Will have to think it over. :-p
Hey Dean. I know during Super Bowl week, the host city does have Super Bowl related venues and events going on. I was at Super Bowl XL in Detroit and there were tons of them. Could these venues have just been mislabeled as being Super Bowl XLV?
Sorry for the n00b question but where is the “Trending” section in the app? I’m using an Android phone for what it’s worth.
tia
This was used previously during the November 2010 US elections. You will see it float to the top automatically on Sunday.
Trending venues show up at the top of the Places list. I believe it takes 5 or more people checked in to be Trending, but apparently they can manually set a venue to “trending” for this.
Thanks guys!
Thanx, tia, you saved a fellow n00b the embarrassment by beating me to the punch with this question. Looking forward to netting this badge on my sixth “day out”…
The best part of it all is that for us Blackberry users there is no “trending venue” in our old 1.9.x.x app… retarded!
I’m running v.1.9.12 on my BB Tour and I have Trending Places pop up every now and then when I search places.
Really? Wow I’ve never seen them. We’ll see on Sunday.
I get trending venues all the time too.
HERE WE GO STEELERS!
hi, I’m Italian and I’d like to know if the badges (except the one in dallas) will be available here too.
I guess it would be considered cheating, but… I want them
I don’t think it’s cheating because they are allowing people to check-in to “global venues” to get the badge. You’ll be doing the same thing everyone else is.
It would be cheating for you to check-in to Cowboys Stadium during the Super Bowl to get a Swarm Badge.
thank you, Charlie.
I wanted to be completely sure
[...] och NFL samarbetar och enligt bloggen About Foursquare kommer alla foursquareanvändare pÃ¥ söndag att hitta en “Super Bowl Sundayâ€-venue längst upp [...]
I feel like everybody missed the point (as usual). Two of these badges are, in effect for checking into a television show. Watch the Superbowl, get a badge. So much for not crossing that line.
so … the Lakers and Celtics badges worked the same way … regardless … the badges have nothing to do with the TV broadcast but rather with supporting your favorite team (of the two)
I’m in agreement with Gordon on this one. The badge isn’t rewarding you for watching the television broadcast; in fact, there’s nothing about that involved in the promotion or execution whatsoever. It’s simply rewarding you for supporting something (in this case, a sports team).
This is far from the first time foursquare has offered a badge for supporting something; previous badges of that sort include the #4sqDay 2010 badge, the World Aids Day badge, and as Gordon points out, last year’s Lakers and Celtics badges during the NBA Finals.
@Michael That’s what GetGlue is for.
Will this work outside the USA? Will there be a trending location in cities in Canada for example?
I love it!! Now I can root for the Green and Gold & post my pride on Facebook as well. I’ve loved the Pack since I was a young girl. Thank you Foursquare! It’s the icing on the cake for what will be a monumental Sunday. Let’s bring the Lombardi Trophy back home!
This is definitely another reason why people should get with the program and be on Foursquare.
I love the Superbowl badges! I’ve been rooting for the Pack since I was a little girl, even before Brett Favre….it’s time for the Green and Gold to bring the Lombardi Trophy back home. I won’t be caught dead with the Steelers badge, but it will be interesting to see who ends up unlocking what and the stats that come out of each State to see what the Nation thinks. I have friends that want to unlock both. Let’s see as this may skew the numbers.
I’ll be posting my vote onto Facebook; one more push for additional Foursquare users as well.
Sorry for the double-post! I thought the first one was lost!
[...] via aboutfoursquare [...]
I hope swarm badges count too! Some people would even get Playa Please. xD
I KNEW it! I just knew there were going to be Super Bowl badges. LOL.
Just wait for Indonesian jumpers comes around, they’ll make “the epic” for all of you guys. LOL
I dont have a smart phone.. I have to used the foursquare.com/mobile site on my phone will i be able to see the trending?!
The mobile site isn’t able to show trending places…but besides that, you also can’t earn badges with check-ins from the mobile site (unless they’ve made an exception for this case, since location doesn’t matter for the Steelers and Packers badges).
Your best bet is to search for a venue called “Super Bowl Sunday”. If that shows up, you might as well try checking into it and see what happens.
Are you certain about badges not being able to be unlocked that way, @Spam? I believe it’s just mayorships that you can’t earn using mobile. Otherwise, a lot of jumpers would have already pulled an Egypt. (Too soon to joke?)
JR, I could be mistaken, but I’ve been under the impression that it’s indeed the case. Here’s the updated list of what mobile check-ins are eligible for, which has been getting shorter and shorter:
http://support.foursquare.com/entries/384200-i-can-t-use-the-app-on-my-phone-what-can-i-do-on-the-mobile-web
It’s not specifically stated that mobile check-ins won’t earn badges, but it’s pretty clear that they’re moving away from allowing rewards for activities that can’t be verified.
based on that, it DOES sound like you’re right. I DM’ed your Bmore account just now though.
And lo and behold, you’re right…they’re still (albeit quietly) allowing badges for mobile web users. That’s good news for you, Kellie!
ok i will check that out thank you!!
Can we get a wrestlemania badge next month?
I like it how Foursquare creates a “global” (its OK to be a jumper this time) venue, no one complains about it. What a bunch of hypocrites.
And in my opinion (as a born-and-raised American) American sports needs to get rid of franchises and put some real competition out there – like relegation. Bottom 2-4 teams get demoted pal. There’s no reason for Detroit and Buffalo to exist in the NFL. Baseball is too watered down. Only the NBA is making it work from a franchise perspective. That would make the last month of every regular season for the bottom-feeders crazy interesting.
You can’t compare baseball to any other sport because they don’t have a salary cap and have revenue sharing, keeping these bad franchises afloat. It’s an apples to oranges comparison. That’s the business model in the MLB and it’s not not changing anytime soon.
The NFL is pretty much cyclical and the bad teams now won’t necessarily be in the future. Buffalo’s been to more Super Bowls than the majority of franchises and Detroit has been Matt Millenized the past decade. They’ll be fine with the talent they have and now that he’s out.
The NBA…does anybody really care? A bunch of overpaid prima donnas who don’t play defense. I’ll take college basketball or hockey for that matter, thank you very much.
The NBA? Really?
Teams that have won NBA Championships in last 15 Years:
-Lakers (5)
-Spurs (4)
-Bulls (3)
-Pistons (1)
-Heat (1)
-Celtics (1)
You can go all the way back to 1984(!) and the only team that gets added to that list is the Rockets. NBA is always top-heavy.
Does anybody else find it hard to care about these freebie badges? I totally understand if you are a real Packers or Steelers fan… You must be truly excited!!!
But to me… this falls under the category of everybody will have them and did nothing to get ‘em.
And to those of you who cant even pick a team and plan on unlocking both… thats even lamer! At least pick a side!
Those who die with the most badges still die…
4sq giving us all a jumping opportunity to get badges is bad enough, but unlocking both teams to obtain that one more badge would be like beating up a boy scout just to take his sash…
Interesting point. I’m a die-hard Laker fan and was super-pumped to have a foursquare badge for it when the Finals came around last year. I do remember rolling my eyes at people who unlocked both, especially ones who couldn’t care less about the NBA. Come on, people. It’s one of THE biggest rivalries in the NBA and in sports!
As much as it made me happy that some of my foursquare friends that HATE the Lakers have Laker paraphanelia in their Trophy Case, it also felt like the badge lost value. Then again… they’re all just digital pixels that in the bigger scheme of things, don’t really have true value. You’ll get your 20% off code for unlocking one or the other. (I’m sure you could probably even google a code and get your discount without a badge or even a foursquare account.)
I appreciate your point @5square. I’ll definitely consider it.
Don’t worry about what everyone else is doing. Play the game however it suits you.
I think it’s fine that Foursquare has a mix of easy and difficult badges to earn. That way, everyone can have at least some of them, and those who work at it can have a lot more.
Also, keep in mind that this is a limited-time badge, which effectively makes it a “collector’s edition.” There are other badges from the past that were just as easy to unlock and make people jealous, because they can’t be obtained anymore (or ever again).
Agreed. Everyone plays the game differently. I’ll get the Packers badge because that’s who I’m rooting for. Hate the Steelers with a passion and wouldn’t get that badge if you paid me.
Just throwing this out there, but…… Based on foursquare’s ability to mark a venue as trending globally, has anyone here considered the possibility that foursquare could soon start to allow certain venues or business to pay a hefty premium in order to have their venue “trend” (a la twitter)?
I mean, when I met with one of their biz dev guys, I understood that their business model would ultimately be based around an advertisement / recommendation engine. This kinda opens the door to that future, doesn’t it?
(I know this all inevitable. I just wanted to throw that out there.)
The good thing about one of the teams being the Packers is that everyone in Chicago who isn’t actually originally from Wisconsin is only going to want to unlock one badge. Not like the NBA Finals where people were unlocking both. I shook my head at that.
It was a sarcastic comment and before we knew it was going to be a global venue
I want a Wrestlemania badge next month
When does the venue go live?
What if you live in an area where not many people live…. let alone fsq…
When will the trending item show up? When the game starts?
I dont know… nothing is showing up for me.
Yeah nothing for me either. =(
can anyone post the venue id?
i guess this will only show up as trending in the us?!
It saud “global” badge. and of course nothing is showing up.. the game doesnt start for another 3 hours!!
we’ll see soon
it’s just a little unfamiliar as there were never any trending venues in my country
Nothing here either.
[...] Oh, and don’t forget to check in on Four Square to don your Super Bowl XLV badge! [...]
Foursquare posted on Twitter that it will be right before game time!
Did the venue already show up?
Nothing here for me… maybe because I am in Europe?!
“On Sunday, each foursquare user will see….
- Well, Sunday is almost over in Europe and I’m also curious to see either a venue id or a trending now section soon!
do you think the “trending now” will show up under ‘places’ when the game starts?
Venue won’t show up until it gets close to kickoff
Super Bowl Sunday venue is showing up now.
Shout Go Packers! – badge active
I have to use the foursquare.com/mobile … and when i type super bowl sunday in i just get some bowling ally by house.. help
16641001
No love on my Anrdoid foursquare.
i can’t get the badge because im too far away its in tx im in ma
and my 4 sqr is acting up:(
well, i just tried checking into that “global” venue from Israel, and got the following message:
“Your phone thinks you’re a little far from Superbowl Sunday, so no points or badges for you!”
(not that I care, but still, its somewhat annoying)
http://i53.tinypic.com/b96lcm.jpg
dig this! Love Four Square
My iPod died… new Verizon iPhone won’t be here ’til Monday.
Tried to checking in to KC’s “Super Bowl Sunday” venue… shouted “Go Packers!” but no badge.
Ideas?
I checked into the venue in Arlington, and the Cheesehead badge is now official mine
I checked in, shouted my team, and the screen came up SAYING I unlocked the badge… but since I’m in Canada, at the top it still says that I’m too far from the venue, therefore no points or badges for this check-in. So… I’m… confused lol
That & the badge itself does not show on my badge page. Boo.
I have checked in and shouted “go Steelers” and got the Super Bowl badge. Tried to check-in again and shouted “Go Packers” but no badge.
Can I just get one?
That is correct. You can only get one.
ugh.
checked into the global venue, shouted and everything… got told i was “too far away and no badge or points”
Seriously?! Too Far Away From *What*? It’s a GLOBAL venue.
ugh.
I tried shouting during the Super Bowl, trying to get that Packers badge, and I followed all the rules and everything — but each and every time I tried posting my shout, I got the stupid exclamation point and “server error” message, telling me to try again later. I kept trying and it kept getting later — and all I got was the constant “server error” — no badge. Stupid.
I checked in and it said I was too far away to earn a badge (almost 5 million meters). Worldwide event fail.
I can’t even get a working foursquare! Site says it’s got some hiccups due to lots of check ins.
@Kellie From what I understand you can’t check-in and earn badges via foursquare mobile site.
Yes you can. You just can’t earn mayorships through the mobile site.
Just used the mobile site to get the super bowl badge in arlington and I’m in Atlanta.
Oh good to know. Maybe a check in there will work since the app isn’t working. How do I find the right venue through the mobile site?
I checked in to venue # 16641001
I did too, but unfortunately no badge for me
what is the point of having it worldwide when you cant even get the badge for checking in and say you are too far away?!?!?!
Yup, I finally got the app up and running and I tried checking in with my shout … was told I was too far away from the event and would not earn any badges.
Told me i was too far away, but i still got the badge.
Told me I was too far away and not getting a badge and I didn’t. Very disappointed.
sooo i first checked in and got a superswarm badge but no game badges. then i deleted that and did it again and got the game badges but not the superswarm. did this happen to anyone else? did anyone get a swarm?
I expected to see Swarm badges unlocked, but I haven’t heard of any. After all, Super Bowl Sunday was/is a venue, and according to foursquare’s Twitter feed, over 140,000 users had checked in by the end of the third quarter. Is it possible they created the venue so that only the Super Bowl badges would unlock, but no other badges?
You gotta change your location to arlington and then search for super bowl sunday and it’ll show up. Sorry for the late reply! I was watching the game. GO PACKERS!
I appreciate that Foursquare only allowed one badge or the other. Hopefully this will be a precedent in the future.
Very disappointing it this whole process was a huge failure. After 2hrs of trying to locate and check in to Super Bowl Sunday to be told I was to far away to earn points and a badge was the most frustrating experience with Foursquare. Who knew to change your location. It never said that in the announcement . It said it was worldwide. Huge let down!! Foursquare should award the badge nonetheless to all of us who checked in to make up for this annoyance!!!
Remember it is just a game not like any of you were trying to order comic con tickets. Now that was a nightmare.
Wow, so much complaining. It was super easy for me. I checked in, then was told exactly what to write in order to get the badge. “Go Packers!” was all I needed to say while checking in and I got the badge no prob. btw: I was also no where near Dallas.
I’m with ya Dan. I was over 1 million meters away and had no problems, other than the “4sq over capacity” errors. But for those that didn’t specify… were you using the mobile site? or a smart phone? b/c honestly, I don’t fault them for “not spelling it out” for you on how to attain them from the mobile site.
Just more of a reason to cheat to get the actual SB badge from Dallas.
Altho totally bummed (but still agree with them) about not epic swarm badges lol
Still haven’t got the badge
The little pop-up menu came up & said I got the badge, but it still hasn’t shown up in my badge list. I want my Packers badge!
I checked in, and shouted Go Packers!. My phone says I have unlock the venue, but I didn’t get my badge=_=
I hope everybody knows that the badge is listed under “Partner Badges” and doesn’t show up if you just click on badges. You need to click on the badge icon in the top right, and select “All Badges” or “Partner Badges” instead of the default “Foursquare Badges.” Then you should see your Packers or Steelers badge. Hope that helps some of you!
Already looked there & my total badge # didn’t change. I didn’t get an email notification either, although I “unlocked” the badge on my phone. I wish there was somewhere we could complain to foursquare. It would take someone about 10 seconds to look at my check-in history & see that I should have the badge. Oh well…
It wasn’t the check in that got you the badge, you had to shout out “Go Packers!”
You can tweet @4sqSupport. They’re usually pretty responsive to stuff like that.
Dan – I did shout “Go Packers”.
Chris – Thanks for the recommendation. I’ll try it out.
Same thing happened to me. Did you get this resolved?
No luck yet. Going to tweet again.
Ryan – I did finally get it. Not sure if the tweeting helped or not as I never got a reply, but after 2 tweets (48 hours) I got the badge.
Go Packers ≠Go Packers!
Dan – That is exactly what I shouted, sorry if I didn’t type it properly here. My point was, that I did everything that was required to get the badge, I got the pop-up screen that says I unlocked the badge, but I the badge never actually ended up in my badge list, nor did I get an email. Clearly a foursquare screw up.
Why did my friend who always be in my country get the third badges…
3 badges Just can unlock one . Tired to check in any more !
