Foursquare now notifies you of deals at places on your to-do list
Foursquare’s integration with Groupon, Living Social and other daily deal providers makes it easy to find nearby deals. Foursquare knows a lot more about us, though, than just the places we’ve been, they also know where we want to go. It appears they’ve now married that knowledge with the deals to alert users when somewhere they want to go is offering a discount.
A new notification is appearing on foursquare if a deal is added to one of the venues you’ve added to your to-do list.
It’s a brilliant way to promote the daily deals (from which foursquare actually gets at least a little revenue) in a way that’s both useful and unobtrusive. The deals are now targeted directly to users in a way that Groupon, et. al. simply can’t match. Delivering deals in this way is much better than the daily emails that target whole neighborhoods or cities, because you see them only if you’ve already expressed an interest in trying a place.
Tying deals to location is sure to be a big business. GuideMe and Dealburner are both attempting similar notifications based on the places you’ve been, but this new notification from foursquare ties the discovery aspects of both foursquare and the daily deal services together in a unique way.
What do you think of the new notifications? Would you be more likely to buy a daily deal if it was directly targeted in such a manner?

Unrelated: It looks like some categories have new icons. Mexican restaurant is one.
Yep. And Chinese and Italian. Also a few new categories hiding about.
It’d be cool if we could get a list of the additions; there are probably all sorts of things to recategorize. I did manage to find Tennis Stadium, so Stade Roland-Garros is no longer a generic Stadium.
