Foursquare marks Comic Con 2012 with a special core badge

Comic Con invades New York this weekend, so foursquare is marking the event with a special core badge for attendees.

To earn their badge, foursquare users need only check in at the Javits Center, where the convention is being held. The unlock text reads:

Good morning, meatbags. After you unlock all 3 variant editions of the NYCC badge (just kidding, there’s only one), go harass BKV about the next issue of Saga, and convince @mckelvie he’s missing out. Oh, and be sure to make time for some cosplay gawking.

Foursquare has released partner badges for Comic Cons in San Diego and New York before, but this is their first time using a core badge for the event. Given the crossover between foursquare users (especially in well-saturated New York) and comic book fans, it should be a very popular badge.

UPDATE (3:27 pm): Jamie McKelvie has responded on Twitter to being called out in foursquare’s badge text:

UPDATE (4:19): And foursquare has already modified the unlock text slightly to ”tell @mckelvie you miss him.”

    I find it odd they have this badge but did not do one for the 2012 SDCC, by far the largest con.

      I find that strange, as well. New York is, of course, in their back yard, so they tend to favor things there over other cities.

      I have a theory. I believe Comic Con didn’t want to shell out the cash for a badge this year. So foursquare strategically released a core badge only for the NY one to anger the San Diego fans to pressure Comic Con for next year. At which point, more than likely, foursquare will retire this badge for next year if Comic Con comes out with their own. If they don’t, this badge will be unlocked for sure in San Diego for 2012.

      Either way, I’m happy I live in NYC and went on Sunday (last day). It was a lot of fun. This was my second year going and no doubt I will be there again next year. I hope this is level up badge by next year if Comic Con doesn’t come out with their own badge.

      No, it was only available during Comic Con.
