Foursquare launches tenth city badge: Seattle

Seattle tonight became the 10th city with it’s own foursquare badge since the service launched their city badge program late last year. Like other city badges, the Seattleite badge marks users who’ve checked in at five of foursquare’s recommended spots in town.

The unlock text reads:

Kurt and Courtney. Tom and Meg. You’re in the city of sleepless nights and grunge glory days. Now down that frappuccino, find some flannel, and hang with the Fremont Troll until the rain passes – or the floating bridge floats away, whichever comes first.

It calls to mind two of Seattle’s most famous romances and brings up lots of Seattle-specific topics, including the legendary rain the city gets. The badge design features Seattle’s iconic Space Needle and mountain peaks.

The venues for each of the city badges are determined by the foursquare staff with help from local users, who highlight some of the best spots that are known only to locals.

What do you think of the new badge for Seattle?

Been waiting for this one. I’ve already been to many of the recommended venues, so should get it the next time I check in somewhere on the list. =)

Although partial to my hometown badge “windy city”, I would say aesthetically this is the next coolest city badge. Too bad Ive never been to the pacific northwest.. but I suppose now I have a partial reason.
At first I wasnt crazy about city badges.. now Im a huge fan. Keep em coming…

I love them all except the Windy City badge (not aesthetically, but in terms of venues chosen). The other city badges should be relatively easy to earn for anyone visiting those cities. The Chicago badge takes you to some pretty obscure places. I think it has one venue inside the loop.

Ok. THAT I will agree with.
But.. at the same time.. some of the venue choices are the reasons why some visit Chicago (i.e. United Center, Statue of Michael Jordan, Music Box Theater, DuSable Museum) AND.. Chicago has a lot more to offer then just the Loop. Its the neighborhoods that make this city so great!! Yes, unlocking the Windy City badge is not really conducive to the weekender tourist, it forces those who want to legitimately earn the badge to go out and see the neighborhoods.. or to “Explore Chicago”

Have the newer city badges become easier to obtain? More centralized badge earning venue locations?

Because I will also admit that Ive lived in and around this city my whole life and never heard of Ping Tom Park.. and foursquare saw it as a big enough deal to include it in the unlock text…

Regardless, Im becoming a big fan of these city badges. I cant wait to see what lucky cities are up next. I also cant believe that foursquare has been holding out on the NYC badge.. Maybe all the complains on outlets like this (AF) have made an impact after all..

Still wish these were completely retroactive.

Because we had the first city badge for Foursquare, we followed certain parameters: no more than 20 locations (some more recent badges have had 50 or more) and no major tourism attractions: rather hidden gems that would encompass a diverse (geographically — Chicago is huge, and in terms of type of attraction) group of attractions.

The Windy City badge is actually our fourth Foursquare badge (we have 8 SCVNGR treks too) so we also tried not to overlap too much. http://explorechicago.org/games

Ping Tom Park is gobsmackingly gorgeous on a sunny day, truly a hidden gem. If you haven’t been, go, and consider taking the cheap Chicago Water Taxi down from the Loop at North Michigan Ave or by the Lyric Opera House.

Interesting to read your feedback — all best, Sarah Best.
