Foursquare honors Veterans Day with a Service badge
Today is Veterans Day and foursquare honored Veterans and active service members in a special way: the Service badge.
Users will be able to unlock it by checking in at a Veterans Day celebration today, or in the future by checking in three times at their home base.
There are lots of service members on foursquare who use it as a way to keep up with their families back home. These is a great way for foursquare to honor their sacrifice.
This badge appears on the foursquare core badge list

It didn’t work
As a vet, I like this one!
What does it mean by celebration? I was at a parade and it had event space category and venue name had the word veteran. I even shouted veteran. Nothing works.
My guess is that is will work on a couple of pre-made venues for Veteran’s Day parades in NYC.
This was one issue I really found… still a lost opportunity in my opinion!
Same here.
Hey. I’ve been looking around and I found one in New York. It’s a mobile link though.

Just a note, if you are on a secret mission deep in enemy territory, don’t check in!
Seriously though, this is a great badge idea, kudos to Foursquare!
Great idea… bad execution… http://dwaynekilbourne.com/2011/11/16/foursquare-badge-bummer/
I checked into the Veteran’s Parade in Tulsa, OK today at 10:36 (categorized as Other Great Outdoors) and shouted “Happy Veterans Day!” and got the badge.
Would “home base” be any military base that you check into three times?
Pretty sure you need to shout out “Happy Veterans Day” that worked for me!
I’m in NY and just checked into a veterans day parade in Queens and got the badge. No shout out nessesary.
Checked into a park with festivities and shouted “Happy Veterans Day!” and didn’t get it. But I did get the mayorship and a “Palindrome bonus” for 11/11/11 (which totaled 11 points!) so that’s a nice consolation.
i checked into a park that was under the title of Historical Park, and shouted Happy Veterans Day, and got it.
I just shouted “Thank you to all veterans!” on my check-in to Veteran’s Day (only 3 people checked in) and got the badge. Way to go, Foursquare. This is a great badge!
I just got it all I did was shouted the word veterans and it worked
Was able to unlock badge at Veteran’s Memorial Field in Norwalk, CT at 11:23pm. Just checked in and shouted ‘happy Veteran’s Day’. That easy!
I did not get this badge yet, but I guess it will have to wait until I check into a reserve base two more times as part of the Toys For Tots program… as a veteran, I am severely disappointed in how this badge was set up… for Halloween, all I had to do was shout it; for this badge, foursquare minimizes the badge’s exposure on Veterans Day; what a shame!
Semper Fi, bro.
I think they made it more difficult than a single shout so it would have a bit more value. I tweeted and facebooked the hell out of it once I found out so my jarhead brothers would know.
Have you tried a mobile check-in with a shout yet?
Either way, we’ve still got the EGA badge on our souls and nothing can take that baby away!
Rock on
Indeed… and yes, I tried to shout it whenever and wherever I celebrated it. As we know, if people want to get the badge, they can figure out a way to do it… I just think making it so hard actually hurt the ability to spread the Veterans Day message… all in all, it was a great day… and I am glad to see the badge, but I just was hoping for more… Semper Fi! Ooh Rah!
Chris, I just posted something on my blog about this… http://dwaynekilbourne.com/2011/11/16/foursquare-badge-bummer/ ~ I’d love to hear your thoughts as well, Devil Dog!
Didnt even know about this badge until today… I really need to check this site more often, heh
Interesting, I wonder if venues that have military base as a secondary category will count for the badge moving forward. Most Navy Ships I’ve seen are like this with Boat/Ferry as the primary category.
Great questions… great points… this is one reason why I was hoping this one would not be so difficult to get!
[...] My beef is with the requirements on/of foursquare users who are looking to unlock this badge; as AboutFourquare.com mentions, “users will be able to unlock it by checking in at a Veterans Day celebration today, or in the [...]
Thanks for your information!
I didn’t know this badge…
Can I get this badge now?
