Foursquare hits 8 million users
Foursquare officially hit the 8 million user mark this afternoon. It’s been just over a month since they crossed 7 million users.
Much of their recent growth can be attributed to the busy month they’ve had. In March alone we’ve seen:
- the release of foursquare 3.0 with its Explore feature and new points
- expanded specials for businesses
- a new business dashboard and statistics
- the Venues Project that opens foursquare location data to many more developers
- a ground-breaking deal with American Express
- and a very strong showing at SXSW, including 22 new badges
April stands to be a strong growth month as well. Foursquare day will be celebrated all over the world on April 16 when local superfans will be working to promote foursquare to users and businesses.
What do you think has been foursquare’s biggest driver of growth recently?

I asked the following question to @scottyhendo on #TECHi:
“Will two million foursquare users hook their American Express cards up to their foursquare accounts by mid 2012?”
He said yes, but that I phrased the question incorrectly. He said I should have asked, “Will two million American Express card holders hook up their foursquare accounts to their credit cards?”
Now that Amex is in the mix, it’s on like Donkey Kong
I have an Amex for work but really don’t use it. It only comes out if I travel or something (which is rare). I would take advantage, but not really until I need to use it.
I’m going with 10 mil by July 1.

With 8 Million users and counting… Not knowing about Foursquare or the partnerships and promotions that are connected within it.. will soon be a thing of the past. Companies are starting to take Foursquare as a serious social media outlet and a great way to get exposure… The more venues that get claimed, the faster word of mouth will spread.
When a dog food company in Germany builds a billboard style add that allows your pup to sample dog food by checking in… you know that Foursquare has moved well beyond just a fad.
Im glad, and tell people who dont already know, about Foursquare all the time.
I find myself looking at Facebook less and less. Foursquare being the main reason.
I think @ack154 is dead on…. 10 Million users by July, when looking at the recent growth… seems well within reason. Im glad to be on board.. still handing out Ambassador Cards, Correcting and Flagging Venues, just waiting for my Superuser wings so I can be even more involved in something I have become extremely passionate about..
And to be completely honest… one of my favorite things to come of Foursquares growth are sites like this.
Keep up the good work 4sq & About4sq!
