Foursquare for Nokia S40 phones gets big jump to v2.0
The foursquare app for Nokia’s S40 platform got a big boost today with an upgrade to version 2.0. It offers new features and is available in more countries than before, bringing a nearly-complete foursquare experience to Nokia’s huge feature phone userbase.
Foursquare co-founder Naveen Selvadurai talks about the new version in the video above (watch for a few foursquare staff cameos along the way). The new features in version 2.0 include:
- Foursquare’s most useful feature, Explore, is included for the first time, allowing users to find recommended venues nearby.
- It’s now tightly integrated with Nokia’s own maps
- Nearby specials are now visible within the app
- Users can now add locations to the service
The app is available in more countries than ever before. In a blog post, Nokia says “foursquare can be used by people in more countries on a Nokia device than any other mobile device, illustrating the global appeal of checking-in.”
Nokia developed the app based on foursquare’s open API. It’s now based on v2 of the foursquare API, so S40 users should no longer receive warnings about the impending shutdown of API v1 on August 1.
