Foursquare Categories
Sometimes it can be daunting to find the right category in Foursquare’s nested lists. For instance, Supermarkets are found under Shops > Food > Grocery/Supermarket. This guide shows all the categories Foursquare currently uses to make it a little easier for you to find the category you’re looking for.
If you have a category you’d like to see added, submit it to Foursquare directly.

Is it possible to change a category after setup? I’m a level 1 superuser but don’t appear to be able to do this?
#2 by Chris Thompson on August 15, 2010 - 3:37 pm
Clicking edit on a venue page should bring up a pop-up where you can change categories.
#3 by Jonathan Pollinger on August 15, 2010 - 4:04 pm
Thanks but seems not either in Chrome or IE for me. Pop-up gives option to change and add tags but not categories.

I’ve always wondered why so many venues are mis-categorized as “Arcade”. I’m inclined to think it’s a bug/glitch/clicko.

SKI BUM BADGE: I have checked in to the above location, tagged Ski Resort, over 3 times and a week apart each time. I also checked in to : http://foursquare.com/venue/1216562 twice on 2 different days (also weeks apart).
I have not gotten the ski bum badge. Does anyone have any insight???

What is the default “pin” icon used when there is no category type defined for a venue?
#11 by Devon Smith on April 2, 2011 - 4:22 pm
Anyone have ideas on what % of venues fall under each category and/or what % of check-ins occur for each category?
#12 by Chris Thompson on April 3, 2011 - 12:09 am
Foursquare’s 2010 Infographic will give you some idea of the relative number of checkins. Basically, it’s food, work and shops that make up the vast majority of checkins.

I created my work as a site to check in, but didn’t mark it as a business. The icon just shows a pin drop. I’d like to make it a business. How can I change the category?

Craig, check message no. 6.

Any chance this list could be updated? A great resource for super users.

Is there a pdf/txt/doc/xls of the category hierarchy? Thanks.

Missing Category – Important
“Rugby Stadium” or “Rugby Park” should be listed Under “Arts & Entertainment -> Stadium”. I think that this is important for New Zealand, especially in Auckland with us hosting the Rugby World Cup 2011 in only a few short weeks’ time. Our sports grounds should be rightly categorised as “Rugby Stadium” or “Rugby Park”

Anyone knows where to file monuments, statues or sculptures (not a sculpture garden just a single monument somewhere). Thanks!
#20 by Josh on August 23, 2011 - 6:09 pm
Hey Sandrastica, file it under;
Home, Work Other > Government Building > Monument or Landmark. Strange place to have it, but I guess in the US, most public landmarks/monuments are maintained and cared for by the government.

Thanks a lot! I would have never thought it could be there!

I am trying to claim my company’s offices, but I am not a “Super User” Alot of the locations have missing or wrong information and are in the wrong category. Any suggestions on how I can get this corrected?
#23 by Jonathan Pollinger on August 31, 2011 - 1:31 pm
@Sara – if you let me know the changes I’ll make the amends for you. I’ll need the URLS to venues to save time. Thanks!
#24 by Sara Nicolas on August 31, 2011 - 1:35 pm
Should I email you or just post the information here?
#25 by Jonathan Pollinger on August 31, 2011 - 1:36 pm
Please email me at info@intranetfuture.com. Thanks!

In my area (West Michigan), Arcade is a popular (but incorrect) category for people’s homes.

#30 by Josh on December 16, 2011 - 7:34 pm
You will need to talk to someone who is at least SU Level 1. Jump on the getsatisfaction forums if you need to put anything in queue.
