Foursquare Categories Demystified
Each venue on Foursquare can be put into three different categories*. Navigating the hierarchy of categories to find the one you’re looking for can be difficult sometimes. For instance, supermarkets can be found in Shops > Food > Grocery/Supermarket.
To make it easier to find what you’re looking for, About Foursquare now has a guide to all the Foursquare categories currently in use and where you can find them in the hierarchy.
If you have an idea for a category that isn’t already included, Foursquare has a form where you can suggest new categories to be added.
*Occasionally you’ll find a venue that has more than three categories. This usually means the venue has been merged with another venue that had different categories. All the categories are kept in the merge, which sometimes leads to long lists of categories for a single venue.
