Following the success of Foursquare’s Best of guides for American cities, they’ve launched a very ambitious set of “City Pages” for hundreds of cities all over the world — and they’re all built on data gleaned from Foursquare’s three billion check-ins. The pages are similar in feel to the Best of pages while offering a few interesting new features.
Every one of the city pages highlights the top food and the top things to do in that city. Some add listings for nightlife, the top “new” venues in the city or the city’s top sights. Each list is broken down into multiple categories the user can browse.
They also feature a listing of a few of the city’s hottest specials and some upcoming events in the city (although many seem to be generic movie listings that are playing in every city), making it easy to get an idea of what’s going on in town.
The pages are built from Foursquare’s enormous dataset covering more than three billion check-ins, along with lists and tips that have been sorted through algorithmically to find the hottest places in town.
Clearly built with search engines in mind, it appears one aim is to draw users to Foursquare when they search Google for the “top food in Dayton, OH,” for instance. Explore is mentioned several times on the pages as a way to find more recommendations.
These new pages seem to be ideally suited for travelers looking for the best places in a city they’re planning to visit. On one page Foursquare can show you the places you should visit while you’re in town, based on the places they know are popular from their unique data.
What do you think of the new pages? Is your city listed?
