This is a good move for protecting user privacy. Previously your current city was public information, visible to any who can view your profile. If you went out of town, it was easy for anyone to see where you were — whether you wanted them to or not. Now you have the option to set your hometown to whatever you’d like, or to leave it completely blank if that’s your preference. Your current location will still be visible to your friends in the “feed” section of your profile.
It’s also a good addition for superusers, who often change their “current city” to use the mislocated venues and merge tools in other cities. It will make users easier to find, since someone searching for your name could have been confused if your current city showed up as somewhere they wouldn’t normally expect.
Foursquare has automatically set your hometown based on your checkins last Thursday, so be sure to check the setting and update it if necessary.
