FAQ: How do I add a venue on foursquare?
I often get asked — by experienced users and novices alike — how to add a venue to foursquare. It’s a feature they’ve intentionally hidden in order to make it a little harder to accidentally create duplicate venues.
No matter what platform you’re on — web, iPhone, Android or Blackberry — the process is the same: you have to search for the venue first.
Unless a place just opened (ie., you watched the mayor cut the ribbon), the odds are that the venue you’re wanting to add already exists in foursquare’s database, so searching for it first makes sure you don’t accidentally create a duplicate. If it doesn’t appear, it’s a good rule of thumb to check the spelling and try searching again. Only when you’re certain the venue doesn’t exist in foursquare’s database should you add it using the following steps.
Mobile (Android, iPhone, Blackberry, Windows Phone)
The process for all three is nearly identical, even if the buttons look a bit different. After you’ve searched for the venue by name, tap the “Add this place” button.
You’ll be prompted for the venue name, category and address. The address is optional, but it’s a good idea to add it if at all possible (being sure to follow the official style guide). You can also place a pin on the map to indicate the location of the venue if it differs from your GPS location. Tap “add” and you’re ready to check in.
Desktop
After searching for the venue by name, you’ll see an “Add it here” link at the bottom of the results. Click it and you’ll be taken to a screen where you can enter the venue name, address, and category. You can also place it on the map. Click “Save” to complete the process.
