Celebrate Back to School season with five new foursquare badges

Foursquare is making a concerted effort to lure more college students to the service this fall. At least 10 schools have launched branded pages in the past few weeks and foursquare has begun a search for campus representatives to help evangelize the service. Now they’ve launched a series of five college-themed badges that can be unlocked at select schools across the country.

College campuses are a perfect place for the location based service to thrive. “Universities are recognizing the potential for using Foursquare to communicate with their student body,” foursquare marketing manager Anna Frenkel told Reuters yesterday.

Here are the five badges and how to unlock them, according to Arizona State University.

  • Bookworm BenderBookworm Bender: Check in to any designated study area/library after midnight. “Looks like you’re throwing a late night bender at the library. Ain’t no party like a Pythagorean Theorem party!”
  • Smells Like School Spirit: Check in at any sports stadium, field or complex five times. “Woah! That’s your 5th check-in showing your school pride. You’re a super fan! Now remember to wash off that face paint before you go to bed – huge mistake!”
  • Quad SquatterQuad Squatter: Check in to a quad or commons 10 times. “That’s your 10th check-in at the Quad. Either you’re majoring in Botany, or you just gave up on class altogether.”
  • MunchiesMunchies: Check in to five different campus cafes or dining halls.”Nom Nom Nom. “That’s 5 check-ins at campus dining halls. You must be a Grilled Cheese connoisseur. You deserve a TV Show!”
  • College ExplorerCollege Explorer: Check in to 25 different campus locations. “You’ve travelled far and wide to explore every corner of campus – all without getting scurvy. Magellan’s got nothing on you!”

The exact list of colleges that are eligible for these badges isn’t clear, so get out and start exploring your college campus and see if you can unlock them!

Aww… I like to see new badges, but I still won’t be able to get any of these. Even if I go visit the PSU campus, I won’t get nearly enough checkins for any of these. :(

These are pretty awesome. Makes me wish I was in college now instead of 15 years ago.

these are all exclusive to ASU I believe

Uh, what’s the point then? One random college somewhere. Why not make these applicable at any school?

I like exclusive event badges, but Foursquare needs to start creating more new badges that can be unlocked anyplace in the country (in the vein of say the Starbucks or dog park badges)

The ASU page says, “Foursquare has created five badges specifically for universities”. I don’t think they’d use the word universities if it was applicable only to them.

Based on Chris’ unlock directions, it would be impossible to unlock some of these if they were only applicable to ASU (Munchies & College Explorer).

A badge for studying hard at ASU? Ain’t nobody going to earn that one!

They’re not ASU exclusive. The School Spirit badge I linked to above was unlocked by a coach at the University of Nebraska.

I’m not sure if 4SQ could be less clear about this. Is it only at one school? What schools are “select schools”? Any college with an area tagged “quad” or “dining hall”..etc should be eligible for the badges.

More than likely the correct category has to be set on the venue and that is how the badges are determined. The used to use tags a while back but people kept adding incorrect tags to venues just to earn badges.

And if the category is not correct on a venue, it can be corrected by a Super User.

Funny part is how the Indonesians have unlocked them en masse first.

      I would never expect such a thing… :)

There were so many of them they almost unlocked a swarm at the ASU Library around 4am today. One of them checked in with “35 others.”

Does those badges are available outside the US ? More explicitly, does european campus are considered like in France ?

    • #18 by Chris Thompson on August 22, 2010 - 10:39 pm

I believe all the eligible campuses will be in the US.

Whoa, the people at Foursquare don’t really think much of us Europeans, do they?

So I am following ASU and have checked into more than ten different locations categorized as “college & education” here at The University of Texas at San Antonio and no Campus Explorer badge. Also, checked into a library at UTSA after midnight and NOTHING!

    Anyone else having problems?

    • #23 by Chris Thompson on August 24, 2010 - 1:46 pm

I would venture to guess that UTSA is not one of the “select” schools participating in these badges.
