There’s no easy way to add the bookmarklet to an iPad, despite Apple’s “drag and drop” ease of use for almost everything else.

That doesn’t mean it’s impossible to do, it just takes a little extra effort to get it working. Here are the steps you’ll need to take to get a “Save to Foursquare” bookmarklet on your iPad.

Create a new bookmark (this page, any page, doesn’t matter) by tapping the share button and then “Add Bookmark.”

Name it “Save to foursquare” and click save.

Copy the javascript code below; you’ll need it in step 6.

javascript:(function()%7B(window.___fourSq=window.___fourSq%7C%7C%7B%7D).version='1322831005718';
var%20a=document.createElement('script');a.type='text/javascript';a.src='https://platform-s.foursquare.com/js/modules/widgets.bookmarklet.js';(document.head%7C%7Cdocument.body).appendChild(a)%7D)();void(0);

Open your bookmarks by clicking the bookmarks button and then tap “Edit.”

Scroll to your new “Save to foursquare” bookmark and tap it to bring up the edit bookmark screen.

Paste the javascript code from step 3 into the box where the URL appears, replacing whatever is there.

Return to your bookmarks list, move it up or down as you see fit and then click “Done.”

To test it, head to a page that you know has an hCard address or two embedded (this one is a good example), open your bookmarks and tap your new “Save to foursquare” bookmark. You should see the foursquare box pop up to confirm the addition to your to-do list.

I’ve found foursquare’s lists to be incredibly useful for sharing things to do around town. I’ve created lists of places to photograph, things to do at Christmas and even a list of locations where Rain Man was filmed. The one thing I’ve wanted, though, was a way to embed those lists in a blog post or website.

It turns out I’m not the only one. The Swiss Army knife of foursquare websites, 4sqmap, released today a beta version of a tool that will allow you to embed your lists on any site. It’s an easy way for people to browse all those tips and photos you’ve worked so hard to curate.

There are two different versions available. One shows just the map, while the other lists all the venues and tips in a sidebar to the left of the map. Clicking the venue icons on either one shows the tips and photos associated with that venue on your list.

The directions are easy to follow. Just copy and paste the code and insert your list ID where indicated.

This is a perfect way to highlight a group of places in a blog post, whether you’re a regular foursquare user or not. Foursquare’s lists are easy to create and these maps are incredibly easy to incorporate into a post. When you link to them and users follow them, they offer the added bonus of pinging readers whenever they’re near one of the spots thanks to foursquare’s Radar feature.

What’s your favorite list you’ve created? Where will you embed it with this tool?

If you keep track of your entire life with your iCal calendar, here’s a neat little trick that adds your foursquare history right there alongside your calendar entries. You can go back to any day in your calendar and see exactly where you were and when you were there.

Setting it up is a pretty simple process:

Visit your foursquare feeds page and right click the ICS link and copy it to your clipboard (don’t download it).

In iCal, choose Calendar > Subscribe…

Paste the URL you copied into the Calendar URL field and click subscribe

The options appear. The only thing you’ll definitely want to do here is set Auto-Refresh to something other than “No.” For my needs, once a day works well, but you may find you want it updated more often. From here you can also set the calendar name and the color with which the entries show up on your calendar. Click OK when you’re done.

Your checkins will now appear as if they were regular calendar entries. When you double-click them, you’ll find that they even include your shout and a link directly to the checkin on foursquare so you can see any comments or photos attached to the checkin. You can turn the checkin feed on or off in the left-hand column under “subscriptions.”

Once the foursquare feed is in iCal, you can also have it synced to your iPhone calendar using the “Info” tab in iTunes.

This is a really helpful way to keep track of your history — both the places you were supposed to be and the places you actually were — in one handy place.

PS We’ve previously highlighted a method to track your foursquare checkins in Google Calendar.

Foursquare users tend to not mind seeing foursquare tweets in their Twitter timeline, but for lots of non-foursquare users, they’re a major annoyance. That’s why iPhone Twitter client Tweetbot introduced a new feature that lets its users block particular services — including foursquare, Instagram, Untappd and more — from appearing in their timelines.

To block a service in Tweetbot, simply hold down on the second tab from the right and tap the conversation bubble with an X.

This brings up the muting panel (where you can also mute talkative users and noisy hashtags or unmute services). To add a service, tap “edit” and then the “+” button.

You’ll see a list of more than 50 different Twitter clients you can choose to block. Tap the one you’d like to block to mute it. You can add as many as you like (or don’t like as the case may be).

It doesn’t make much sense to block the actual Twitter clients, but if you’re annoyed by posts from foursquare, Instagram, Untappd, Scoville, PicPlz, Twitterfeed, paper.li, forecast or others it’s a great way to make sure you never have to see them again (in Tweetbot, at least).

In my opinion, Tweetbot is the best Twitter client for the iPhone hands down. It offers a slick UI and lots of extra features (like muting) you won’t find in the official Twitter client. It’s available for $2.99 in the iTunes app store.

So, foursquare just launched their lists feature a few hours ago, but there are already a ton of great lists that have been created. Many of them are by foursquare staff (especially Tristan Walker, who’s clearly spent the past few months building out a very impressive set), but many users have gotten in on the game and created their first lists, too. Below is a list of some of my favorites.

The great thing is that most of these lists will continue to grow since users can keep adding to them over time. If any of these lists strike your fancy, be sure to give them a follow and see how they evolve.

Time Out NY’s Best New Burgers

Anna Frenkel’s Three Days in New Orleans

Mike Singleton’s Harry Potter Dream Tour

Tristan Walker’s Dream Sandwiches

Tristan’s Best Restaurant Views. Ever. — curated from a Quora question

Luke Kingma’s Best of Chinatown (NYC)

Duke University’s First Year Move-In Day

A few weeks ago, I wrote about SU Tools, a Google Chrome (and now Safari, too) extension that makes things easier for foursquare superusers. At the time I called it “superuser tools on steroids.” Since then, it’s grown to Schwarzeneger-like proportions — and just keeps getting bigger.

A few of the new features added since then:

Cleanup — The cleanup feature has seen some major enhancements. It now queries the Google Maps API to try to determine the appropriate address, street name, city, zip, etc. of venues before it formats them properly for foursquare. I’ve even run into a few where it’s been able to find the address when it was completely missing — all with the single click of a button.

Merge Comments — Sometimes it’s necessary to let other superusers know why you’re merging two venues or declining a merge. SU Tools now lets you leave comments for other SU Tools users on merges when you submit them, or when you process them in the merge queue. It’s much quicker and easier than switching to Twitter to let someone know why you’ve denied their merge, for instance.

Requester Details — The merge queue screen now shows details about the user who requested the merge, including a picture, their SU level (if they use SU Tools) and their checkin numbers. These are nice details to know, since I usually give a little extra scrutiny to a merge submitted by an SU1 with 500 checkins than I do to an SU3 with 5,000 checkins.

Remembers merge and deletion requests — Whenever you request a merge or mark a venue for deletion, it’s stored locally. Those then show up on your admin page, where you can see the full list and check to see if they’ve been completed. Search results also get color coded yellow for venues you’ve merged and gray for those you’ve marked for deletion.

Set location to this venue — There’s a new link on venue pages that lets you set your current foursquare location to the lat/long of the venue you’re viewing. This is especially helpful when you switch to the Places panel (SU 2+ only), since you can immediately see venues surrounding the one you’re working on to look for duplicates without having to drag the map pin to that spot.

Other new features include a “show all” button on the suggested friends box, a custom category you can set venues to in one click and prompts to help out with another country’s merge queue when you reach the end of your own (US superusers: is that actually possible?).

Basically, what I’m trying to say is “if you’re a superusers, why the heck aren’t you using SU Tools yet?” It makes the job of editing venues, merging them and processing the queues at least ten times easier. In the few weeks I’ve been using it, I’ve completed more merges than I did in the previous six months combined and I’ve submitted more, too.

If your foursquare account is automatically sharing every checkin to every one of your Twitter followers and Facebook friends, do yourself a favor and go to your settings page right now and turn it off. Don’t pass go, don’t collect $200. Just turn it off. Your friends and followers — and the foursquare community at large — will thank you for it.

I’m one of the biggest advocates of foursquare, and even I’ll admit that one of my biggest annoyances on Twitter is foursquare users who share every single checkin. No one really cares that you’re at the post office or the grocery store for the fourth time this week. If someone wants that kind of detail on every facet of your life, they can friend you on foursquare, where the updates are far less annoying.

Repeated boring checkins are why foursquare has developed a bad reputation among many Twitter and Facebook users, and are cited as a common reason for unfollowing people — or, even worse for the rest of us, blocking foursquare updates on Facebook.

It’s not really the foursquare checkins they’re complaining about; it’s the mundaneness of it all — repeated over and over again — that annoys them. Most of them do want to know when you’re doing something truly interesting, like eating at the hot new restaurant that opened downtown or hiking the Grand Canyon. Even if you turn off Twitter and Facebook sharing by default, you can — and should — still share those cool updates with your friends by sharing that particular checkin from within the app.

On top of the annoyance, sharing every checkin to Twitter has privacy implications. Foursquare is a very private network, hence the reason many foursquare users have a much smaller network of friends there than they do on Twitter or Facebook. Twitter, on the other hand, is a very public network, where your location is shared with the world — good and bad people alike — each time you tweet a checkin. Those tweets create a map — literally — of the places you visit, making it easy to pick out patterns in your checkins.

Reducing the number of mundane checkins helps the foursquare community in the long run. If other users on Twitter and Facebook see it less as an annoyance and more as a way of sharing the cool things they’re doing, it could help foursquare’s userbase grow, making it more attractive to brands and merchants.

Foursquare’s Facebook page is typically littered with recent complaints about the feature. Many of those users clearly view it as one of foursquare’s core functions and are extremely frustrated that it doesn’t work for them. Foursquare today rolled out a change to their Facebook connection that should fix the issue for users who’ve been having problems with it.

If you’re having trouble with foursquare posting to your Facebook wall, foursquare recommends that you disconnect and then reconnect your Facebook account to make sure the new settings take effect. To do so:

Visit your foursquare settings page and click “change” next to the Facebook logo.

Click “Unlink your Facebook account from foursquare.”

Sign out of Facebook by clicking Account > Logout.

Return to your Settings page and click “Link to Your Facebook Account.”

Click the Login with Facebook button.

Sign in using Facebook Connect.

Visit your Facebook application settings, click Edit Settings next to foursquare and ensure that all three boxes are checked under the Additional Permissions tab.

You accounts should now be properly linked.

This update appears to pave the way for integration with Facebook Places. There is now a “publish checkins on my behalf” setting on Facebook and foursquare now asks permission to “read (your) check-ins and friends’ check-ins” when connecting your account.

If you run a WordPress blog, you may have noticed a problem when you try to embed the new “Add to Foursquare” button in a post. If you paste it in the HTML editor, it disappears as soon as you switch to the Visual editor. This is because WordPress’ visual editor, TinyMCE, strips iFrame content by default. Since the “Add to Foursquare” button is embedded as an iFrame, it goes out the window too.

There’s a way to fix it, however, if you have access to the functions.php file included in your WordPress theme. Simply add these lines to the file to prevent TinyMCE from stripping iFrame content alltogether:

// fix TinyMCE for iframes

add_filter('tiny_mce_before_init', create_function( '$a',
'$a["extended_valid_elements"] = "iframe[id|class|title|style|align|frameborder|height|longdesc|marginheight|marginwidth|name|scrolling|src|width]"; return $a;') );

The Add to Foursquare button won’t show up when you switch to the visual editor, but it will when you publish the post.

/Thanks to this post on the WordPress forums for the solution

The very first step to getting your brand started on foursquare is setting up an account. It seems simple enough, but there are three things you should pay attention to to make sure you’re maximizing your visibility on foursquare.

Put your organization’s entire name in the first name field. To protect user privacy, foursquare only shows a user’s last initial until you become friends with that user. The last name field, though, isn’t required. If you split your organization’s name, users who aren’t your friend will only see the last initial on your profile page, like Go Encinitas did in the screenshot at right. You don’t want users to have any question about who you are before they add you as a friend. Putting your organization’s name in just the first name field solves the problem.

Link your Twitter account to create a username. Foursquare user accounts that aren’t linked to a Twitter account get an ugly string of numbers for their user ID (like Downtown Muncie’s -103781 above). To make your profile easier for users to find, link it to your Twitter account from the foursquare Settings page.

Create a foursquare-friendly profile picture. If you simply upload your logo, foursquare will squeeze it to fit a 75×75 pixel square. This can create a squished look like Go Encinitas’ logo above. Create a square version of your logo for the best results. You’ll want to make sure it’s readable at both 75×75 pixels and at the 30×30 pixel size used in friend lists.

Do you have any other tips for brands setting up their foursquare profiles for the first time?
