Bagel expert? Show it with Foursquare’s newest expertise badge

M4ND43CPHBME2KXTBagel fans rejoice. Foursquare is now offering an expertise badge that lets you show everyone your knowledge of your favorite circular dough concoction.

Just like other expertise badges, you can earn level one of the Schmear badge by checking in five times at the same bagel shop or at three different bagel shops. Level two is unlocked when you’ve visited five different shops, and each subsequent level (up to ten) unlocks with each five new venues.

The unlock text reads:

You know what you want: one everything bagel with scallion cream cheese, lox, red onion, tomato, capers, and maybe some sturgeon. Better pick up an Altoid while you’re at it…

My favorite badge designs are the ones where something circular becomes the badge (a la Vinyl), as the bagel has in this instance, covered with cream cheese.

    Now this is a really cool badge.
    The latest worldwide expertise badges I thought were a little obscure.
    Maybe thats because I dont often see a lot of Indian and German restaurants, even in here in a major metropolitan area..
    BUT THIS.. this is really cool.
    I applaud 4sq for this one. Im sure users will be pleased with this.. Except for the normal moans and groans about how some bagel shops are categorized as bakeries and coffee shops..

    does this mean that bagel shops no longer count towards the bakery badge? … or are they a “double” and count towards both?

      It’s possible they count toward both – beaches count toward both Swimmies and Great Outdoors.

      Foursquare typically doesn’t retire expertise badges.

    Dunkin Donut sells bagels, but that doesn’t seem to trigger the Bagel badge. Does the place have to have “Bagel” in the title?

      Has to have “Bagel Shop” as the primary category. Dunkin’ Donuts stores are typically either categorized as coffee shops or donut shops, but not bagel shops. As far as I can tell, they’ve never standardized on one category for all their venues.
