B-Roll: Foursquare for Android receives updated check-in screen

Foursquare pushed an update for their Android app last night, bringing it to version 2012.10.23. It now features the same check-in screen found in the iOS app.

In this version, the Facebook, Twitter and “off-the-grid” toggles now appear to the right of the shout box. There’s a new icon that makes it easier to tag your friends.

In addition Foursquare has “made design tweaks and a bunch of performance updates to make the whole app faster.”

The update is free in the Google Play store. Give the new check-in screen a try and let us know what you think in the comments.

    It rendered me quite speechless today when i discovered that the check-in button is gone. ATM it’s missing entirely from the bottom of the check-in screen on my device. It’s not scrollable past the picture field; button is not in the upper right corner either (like in the ios version with keyboard on). Strange and quite frustrating.

    I find this update pretty usefull. I have been wondering if this iOS feature would come to Android. @Miou, on my device (Android 4.0.4) the check-in button does go in the upper right corner (an it’s green) when I have my focus in the text area to write down a shout. But, while keyboard is on, the check-in button disapear from under the picture field.

    So you’re not even able to check-in, at all?

    As for me, the update works perfectly well.
    My HTC Incredible S (4.0.4) screen looks exactly like the captured image above.

    Bottom line, I’m quite satisfied !

    Well, they didn’t make it worse, which I guess is a good thing. This cosmetic change does use the screen real estate better, but the toggles on the right seem kind of an odd design choice. Overall the app runs just as slow as it always has, so I dunno what improvements they were expecting. I’ve got an old device (Galaxy S, old by Android standards I guess) and it’s pretty laggy. But then, so is practically everything else on the phone.

    It’s fixed with the newest update. Because my HTC Chacha obviously sports ‘keyboard on’ all the time, i suppose the app “could not decide” whether the keyboard was on or off — simply a focus issue.

    @Jean-Francois I was able to check in, tapping a blank upper right corner. After much experimenting I discovered that it reacted to that after a while but with a considerable lag. Now it’s superfast and easy.
