B-Roll: Foursquare 5.4.2 for iPhone lets you choose your direction provider

Foursquare released version 5.4.2 of their iPhone app today. It was mostly a bug fix release, but one small surprise made it’s way into this version: users can now choose whether to get their directions from Apple’s built-in Maps application or from Google Maps. Since it was revealed earlier this afternoon, we’ve heard from many ecstatic users who dislike the bundled Maps.

      For the record, I chose Apple Maps. I really like the way it works. I’ve navigated in a number of different cities and never once had a problem with the maps or directions themselves. Their POI database sucks, though, so that’s why I use Foursquare to find what I’m looking for and then open up the directions in Apple Maps.

    I seems to work based on the filled out address of the venue, not the coordinates. So it doesn’t work for venues that have something else in the address field, like the name of a shopping mall, university campus or building name for subvenues. Consequently it doesn’t work for any address in Brussels either, since they are mostly filled out bilingual, which Google Maps doesn’t recognise… :-(

      That’s unfortunate. They’ve invested so much in making sure their venues are in the right spots that I’m surprised they’ve gone that route. Perhaps you should mention that to @4sqsupport.
