Perth, Australia is the latest recipient of a foursquare city badge, thanks to the launch of the Sandgroper badge today.

As with other city badges, users must check in to five of foursquare’s recommended spots in the city. The list was created by user Michael S.

The unlock text reads:

Observe the Perthians in their natural habitat: grilling snags on the barbie, sipping a quiet bevvy from the Esky, gathering by the beach to devour some fish n’ chips. And – look! Just there! They’re off to the club in Northbridge! Streuth.

    I’m appalled by the badge text. Other than the mention of Northbridge, there’s nothing exclusively “Perth” about it; it relies on outdated Australian stereotypes, misappropriates obscure vernacular (Perthians? Bevvies? Really??) and worst of all, it doesn’t even sound like a foursquare badge unlock statement. I’m upset because this was our chance to showcase ourselves to the foursquare users of the world – to show who we really are and what we’re about, and now we just look like a bunch of sandgropers (which is mildly perjorative) who can’t spell “strewth.” :(
