I stopped checking in at my office a long time ago, but today I have a new reason to start. Foursquare has launched the 9 to 5 badge for people who check in at work on a regular basis.
The unlock text reads:
Looks like someone’s filed 15 TPS reports in 30 days. Ummm… Yeeaahh… we’re gonna need to go ahead and move you downstairs into Storage B.
It’s a 3-in-1 reference to the infamous movie Office Space, a funny coincidence since people often compare foursquare badges to “flair,” another Office Space reference.
This badge, along with the You’re Not in Kansas Anymore and Hangover badges released on Tuesday, should help to silence some of the critics that feel foursquare is too New York-centric. 9 to 5 should be available to anyone, anywhere.
What do you think of the 9 to 5 badge? Is foursquare doing a better job of releasing general badges lately?

Wondering if the 9 to 5 badge will conflict with any marketing promotions where “Mayors” get rewarded…
#2 by Mike Handy on December 3, 2010 - 12:32 pm
Since you can give up a mayorship I would guess it wont… ie policy that mayors cant be employees.

LIterally was about to hit send and get this one to you guys. I laughed hard when I saw this one pop up and ruin the normalcy of my day.

How does one unlock this badge?
#5 by Paula Bardell-Hedley on December 2, 2010 - 4:40 pm
Anyone know what you have to do to get this one?
#6 by Spam on December 2, 2010 - 4:44 pm
My guess is that you just have to check into the same location 15 times within 30 days. Maybe it’s restricted to certain categories, such as “Corporate/Office”.
#7 by Spam on December 2, 2010 - 4:42 pm
LOVE this badge…but I’m wondering if this is the right thing to encourage, since a lot of businesses have an employee mayor that denies their customers the opportunity. (And that’s a big loss for those businesses, since mayorship battles cause increased customer visits!)
#8 by Michael on December 2, 2010 - 4:47 pm
I agree. Though if your business isn’t an office, it kind of defeats the purpose of the badge. Plus, employers can remove employee Mayors now.
#9 by Chris Thompson on December 2, 2010 - 4:48 pm
I imagine this will be restricted, as you said, to the “Corporate/Office” category. Those venues can’t have specials anyway, so it shouldn’t create a problem. Businesses with specials should be adding their employees as mayors, too, so that shouldn’t be an issue.
#10 by Jason on December 2, 2010 - 4:58 pm
I don’t think it SHOULD be restricted to “Corporate/Office”. I work in a radio station on a college campus, which currently is characterized as “Other – College & Education” and “Other-Entertainment”. We have an office and we push A LOT of paper.
#11 by billybarker on December 2, 2010 - 4:43 pm
My guess is you will have to checkin 15 times at the same location in a month and it has to be a Work labeled venue.

What a fun idea. Foursquare has been doing a good job lately of making more tangible badges for those of us who don’t live in big metropolitan areas. How do I unlock this badge?
#13 by McP on December 2, 2010 - 4:47 pm
A five day (Monday-Friday) check in at the same location would be cool. No luck at my office just now and I have quite a few check in’s there.
#14 by Satisfied on December 2, 2010 - 4:48 pm
great job foursquare!!
now there are more worldwide badges can be unlocked !!
#15 by DannyS on December 2, 2010 - 5:15 pm
I see that people have already earned this badge, so it is unlikely that it requires 15 days or 15 check-ins to do so. Any other thoughts on how to earn this badge?
#16 by ack154 on December 2, 2010 - 5:18 pm
Not unlikely at all actually… just retroactive. So your past checkins count. Then you really just need one or two more to unlock it after it becomes available.
#17 by Kel on December 2, 2010 - 5:15 pm
I don’t think I can get this one, I work from home and i’m not making my home office a venue. Alas.
#18 by ack154 on December 2, 2010 - 5:19 pm
More general badges should mean more people keep interest longer…
But I don’t think as many people pay attention to the badges and are really “trying” for them as some of us might. So that doesn’t necessarily apply to everyone.

I suspect a lot of office jobs are about to get outsourced to Indonesia.

I work from home. I figure I’m already the Mayor here, though my husband may disagree.

Check in 30 days to get the badge… I got it yay!!!
#24 by Zue.Zoey on December 2, 2010 - 8:04 pm
i have got the badge this morning when i check-in to my office!
#25 by Lahatiel on December 2, 2010 - 8:09 pm
My work venue happens to be Corp/Office and I already check in once a day, every M-F at 6:30am — so already had 15+ check-ins in the past 30 days. My morning check-in didn’t unlock it, so I’m guessing it might not yet have been active then, but I checked in a second time today, after seeing this at 2:30pm (as I’m off tomorrow and all next week, and didn’t want to wait), and that one unlocked it for me.
#26 by ack154 on December 2, 2010 - 10:38 pm
“but I checked in a second time today, after seeing this at 2:30pm”
That was after you got back from a “late lunch” … right?
#27 by Abu MarLo on December 2, 2010 - 10:56 pm
LOL !! =))
#28 by Doug on December 3, 2010 - 9:34 am
I checked into my corporate/office location this morning and nothing. I’ve been here plenty of times in the last 30 days.
#29 by DannyS on December 3, 2010 - 2:10 pm
Yup, same here. Still uncertain what I have to do to earn this badge. Maybe I have to file a TPS report?
#30 by billybarker on December 3, 2010 - 9:40 am
I just got the badge when I checked into work this morning! Awesome! I love the Office Space reference.
#31 by Mike R on December 3, 2010 - 9:46 am
Thank you so much, Foursquare. I had no idea so when this came up, it really made my Friday!
#32 by glennixd on December 3, 2010 - 10:02 am
Me too. Got it when I checked into the office this morning. I’ve already been checking in M-F for quite some so can’t say for sure what number of checkins triggered it but it’s active.
#33 by McRibisBack on December 3, 2010 - 10:20 am
I was surprised to get this badge this morning, then happy for a moment, and then depressed. lol
#34 by Matt on December 3, 2010 - 11:09 am
Jason: If you became mayor of your workplace, you could add the “Corporate/office” category.
Oh, wait… never mind.
#35 by Michael Pierce on December 3, 2010 - 11:40 am
Love this badge and the Office Space reference. Perfect. I’ve been lax in checking in at the office lately…need to get back in the swing of it again! Just noticed that someone bumped me out as mayor at work as well…not that it matters any more. :-p
#36 by RollsEyes on December 3, 2010 - 12:43 pm
I applaud Foursquare adding more badges that can be obtained outside of NewYork. I can also get behind the Office Space references. But, a badge that encourages people to check in at work? That is lame. What’s next, a badge for the losers who check in at their own home?
#37 by Giselle Bell on December 3, 2010 - 3:25 pm
So all of a sudden checking into work makes you a loser?? Right…..
I work hard to maintain my work Mayorship >= (
#38 by RollsEyes on December 3, 2010 - 5:30 pm
No… not all of a sudden.
#39 by ack154 on December 4, 2010 - 7:28 pm
I think there’s a difference between checking into your desk or a conference room or your office bathroom vs checking into a proper venue for your company.
The first ones? Ya, kind of loser-ish… but checking in once when you get to work in the morning? Not that big of a deal. And can be just as fun as any other mayorship if you actually have other employees to compete with.
Of course we’ll all entitled to our own opinions on that one, but it is all in how you choose to play.
#40 by Giselle Bell on December 3, 2010 - 3:24 pm
I just got it! Awesome, love it.
#41 by McP on December 3, 2010 - 7:10 pm
I’ve checked into my office more than 15 times the past 30 days and the venue is “office/corporate” with the building icon. Is it 15 times specifically between 9am-5pm local? Some of my older check in’s may have been earlier in the morning or leaving after 5pm.
#42 by Rob on December 20, 2010 - 12:09 pm
I have a feeling that this is only 9 – 5 as I normally check in at 8:30am and people who arrive after me and use Four Square less than I have unlocked this
#43 by Lahatiel on December 20, 2010 - 1:56 pm
See my post #25 above — all my prior check-ins leading up to my unlocking the badge on the first day it went active came at 6:30am.
#44 by Lahatiel on December 3, 2010 - 7:51 pm
@McP: no, the prior check-ins aren’t restricted to that timeframe; see my reply #25 above.
#45 by Amanda on December 4, 2010 - 12:10 am
I’ve checked into my place of work almost 100 times… can I still get the badge? I haven’t yet.
#46 by CC on December 6, 2010 - 12:20 pm
Do you think a place labeled “coworking space” counts?
#47 by Rachel on December 7, 2010 - 10:06 am
This is awesome!! I haven’t checked in to my work in months. I’m the only one who uses it obviously… So I got my mayorship and didn’t look back say for the random shouts O:-) but darn it now I’m going to have to pick it back up as I’ve got like 2 checkins in the past 2 months
#48 by CmbtEngr on December 9, 2010 - 5:32 pm
I have 101 checkins at my office and still no badge.
#49 by Jeremy on December 11, 2010 - 1:05 pm
31 check-ins the past 60 days and no badge for me…
Wonder if it hurts that I am already mayor of this joint.

Same here I updated the category to reflect Corp/Office and still nothing
#51 by Chad on December 15, 2010 - 10:26 am
I am with all of you. I have well over 15 check-ins in the past 60 and nothing here either. Also I have over 10 check-ins at “Playground” and nothing there either.
Anyone else noticing that they aren’t getting badges for multiple things?
Hard to play the game when it doesn’t work.
#52 by Stefanie on December 15, 2010 - 6:48 pm
Check in 15x in 30 days at a venue categorized as “Corporate / Office”
#53 by CC on December 17, 2010 - 12:11 pm
But what about Coworking SPace??
#54 by pepper on December 21, 2010 - 5:19 am
but… but… what if i have a steady job with strict work hours but i work from home because the company hasn’t established an office in my country yet?
#55 by Beth on January 6, 2011 - 5:49 pm
So did it get figured out if this has to be for “Office” places? I work at a hospital during the day, & am hoping I can get it…
#56 by Helen on January 25, 2011 - 11:39 am
Does “Corporate/Office’ have to be the primary category in order to unlock this badge?
#57 by Chris Thompson on January 25, 2011 - 12:46 pm
I believe it does, but I’m not certain.
#58 by Giorgio Marandola on February 4, 2011 - 3:12 am
Just unlocked this badge in Italy, Milan, so it’s true: anyone and anywhere!

love these badges. I am a nerd and these probe it. Where’s my stapler?
#60 by SoleSupreme on March 31, 2011 - 11:30 am
I’ve been frustrated not being able to earn this badge for the longest, I’ve been at the “office” venue over 300 times. TODAY, I FINALLY earned this badge. My conclusion is that, you have to check-in at the location 15 times in 1 month, rather over the 30 day justification. Plus like the others stated above, the venue needs to have the appropriate category.
#61 by Mosh on May 26, 2011 - 5:31 am
Hum. I’m a teacher and I check into work every day… at a school, not an office so I won’t get this one
