4th & Mayor updated to v2 with lots of enhancements
4th & Mayor, the quasi-official foursquare client for Windows Phone 7, received a major update to version 2 last night. It now mirrors many of the features of foursquare’s most recent iPhone app, making it the first app to do so. Even foursquare’s official clients on other platforms haven’t been updated.
The app features a new checkin process that’s much faster than before. Users click the checkin button as soon as they open the open rather than having to swipe to the places tab to do so.
“The nearby places list now shows a lot more places than before, loads quickly, and it will update as you walk around – the location should be more accurate now,” says developer Jeff Wilcox in a blog post announcing the update.
As in the recent iPhone update, nearby specials and trending venues have been moved to the Explore tab. Users can also add venues and checkin photos and browse friends’ point totals, favorite venues and categories — features missing from the previous version.
Foursquare released an official app (sponsored by Microsoft) on the day Windows Phone 7 launched (despite yesterday’s reports on TechCrunch and The Next Web). In May, they began pointing users to 4th & Mayor instead, since the app was much more advanced than the official offering. A new version of the official app is supposedly in the works.
