As April 16th begins to dawn around the world, people are getting a special surprise with their first checkin — the #4sqDay 2011 badge. To say “Thank You” to their users, foursquare has made it an easy badge to unlock; all you have to do is check in on April 16.

The unlock text for the badge reads:

And we thought last year was huge! Happy 4/4^2 day! Thanks to all of you amazing people, for organizing over 1000 parties around the world for our little startup! We would give a speech, but we’re just trying to hold back our tears.

In fact, they did give a speech of sorts, releasing this YouTube video where many of their employees say thanks to foursquare users:

There are more than 1,000 parties planned around the world. You can find your local celebration and RSVP at meetup.com/foursquare.

Foursquare isn’t the only app offering a badge to mark #4sqDay. Untappd is joining the fun with a limited edition badge. To unlock it, all you need to do is check in a beer on Foursquare Day, tag it with a location and push it to foursquare. They’ve also released a page that visualizes beer checkins from around the world. Each checkin helps your city move to the top of the leaderboard.
